Summary: Suzie has become disillusioned about Torchwood.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.
A/N: Double drabble.




Back when she was recruited to Torchwood, it had all been so exciting and new. Suzie had been filled with awe and wonder at each new discovery but as time had passed the thrill had worn off.


She’d started to realise they never got anything really good. They got Weevils and Hoix, both species willing to eat whatever they could get their claws on. They got bits of unidentifiable tech, most of it broken beyond hope of repair. They got random objects from earth’s past, none of which were worth anything, and they got junk, the discarded refuse of a thousand worlds. The Rift should be charged with littering.


Where were all the wonderful things she’d expected to discover, the technology that could change the world? Where were the aliens from advanced civilisations who could provide the people of earth with cures to all known diseases, eliminate air pollution, and provide clean sources of energy?


Jack was no help; he kept talking about timelines and how they had to be maintained. He said changing the future would be catastrophic, but he was wrong. They should be using what they found to make the world better, otherwise what was the point?

Suzie always wanted more.

Yes, she did, and then she shot herself. But she'd already murdered several innocent people by that point.

Then I saw Indira Varma on "Bones" and had to forget she wasn't actually Suzie.

Goes to show what we probably missed out on had Suzie been written differently.

Well, at least we got to see a "female British" version of Booth. I didn't care for Brennan's version (Mark from Broadchurch). So cliche to keep hitting on her. I'm surprised she didn't mind it. This seemed to be the theme when Booth wasn't on her radar yet.

An attractive and confident woman like Brennan would consider his interest her due.

Unfortunately Indira Varma wasn't available which is why she only had the one episode, then another later in season 1. So we were stuck with Gwen.

Yeah. I read Indira Varma was busy having a baby and was scheduled for another show instead. RTD planned to kill her character off from the get go. Without Gwen, we wouldn't have had Rhys. That's the only incentive I could think of.*shrugs*

True, Rhys wouldn't have been needed without Gwen. Of course Gwen wasn't needed either... The other characters would have had more screen time without her and there could have been a greater focus on the things that came through the Rift instead of Gwen's home life. It was supposed be an SF drama not a soap opera.

Although Rhys could have been introduced in a different capacity if needed. Either way, I didn't need to see Torchwood through "Gwen's eye's". Wasn't this Jacks spinoff?

Xena and Gabrielle had an authentic emotional bond and I don't even ship them.

That's true, they could have added his character in any number of ways.

It was supposed to be Jack and his team. RTD just wanted it to be about Gwen. Sad really how the entire premise of the show was wasted.

In that case, it wouldn't have hurt to put Rhys in the promos shots for both "Children of Earth" and "Miracle Day". Kai Owen was getting star billing by then.

But the show had to be all about Gwen! *sighs* The whole thing was mishandled. There was a great cast who should have been utilised better. RTDs obsession with Gwen wrecked what could have been a truly great show.

Gwen didn't have some backstory to understand her motivations in life. She was just bored with her job. So it was utilized through Rhys. Oh well. It's done, its dusted. We can just settle for audiobooks with Rhys or crossover/fix-it fics.

You would think...

Castle: Because you’re tall. Now go in there and do your job.

I'm sorry. I've gone down this rabbit hole of rewatching Castle.

I don't think anyone needs training to ask questions. Gwen is just plain nosy!

Gwen's negotiation skills left a lot to be desired. It was either that or flirting to get her way.*shrugs*

Yeah, if RTD wanted Gwen to be a cop he should have done research into police interrogation techniques and proper procedure because Gwen wasn't a believable cop at all, ad she brought nothing to the team that the other members couldn't have done better.

(Haven't seen any Lucifer yet. Maybe it will come to a TV channel I can watch at some point...)

I forgot how Gwen even resigned from her job as a cop and maintain an easy, breezy, relationship with the police department. I know Andy questioned her so I'm probably blanked it out of my memory.*shrugs*

Castle: “‘Don’t leave town?’ Don’t you need probable cause for something like that?”
Beckett: “Only he doesn’t know that, does he?”
Castle: “You can lie like that? That is so coooool!”.

How many ways can you spin a detective show? Answer? It doesn't matter, what matters is the characters and long story arches. Not really the whodunits.

She didn't resign on screen, Jack just offered her the job and she accepted,but I think the police probably fired her for incompetence and not following orders. I wouldn't say she maintained a good relationship wit the police after leaving though. She was so condescending and patronising to her former colleagues!

That's so true, it's the characters who matter. If they are interesting then that draws the viewers in and keeps them interested.

Good thing it wasn't my memory. Bad, that Gwen acted like she was in a high rank position. Instead we got Andy being "jealous" of Rhys, while borderline frustrated with her shadiness.*scoffs*

ANDY: All right, stop lying. You know what happened here. Why aren't you telling me?
GWEN: What are you talking about, Andy?
ANDY: Right. Forty five minutes later. What's your mate Mulder doing there?
GWEN: Jack?

If detective shows did crossovers with each other, they'd probably be no long story arcs. Since they'd solve each others personal cases.*theory*

I like Andy, I think he's too smart to fancy Gwen. If I'd been a writer he would have called her out in her crappy treatment of her ex colleagues.

There are crossovers from time to time. They can be fun, seeing characters from different sows interacting.

Didn't Andy not RSVP for Gwen's wedding invitation because he had a "crush" on her? Hence why he called Rhys "fat"?

Yes, he did. It was RTD's conceit that Gwen was such a wonderful, ideal woman that every man she met would instantly fall hopelessly in love with her. *rolls eyes*

At least Ianto had the sense not to be interested in such a shallow, tactless, self-involved, patronising, gossip-hungry brat.

While RTD was putting Gwen up on a pedestal, he was putting Toshiko down. Only in the episode Adam did we get to see her as the confident and assertive type. When a man gave a compliment to Tosh it was always understated or unwanted.

I was glad when the Owen/Gwen thing was over and done with. They were just using each other.*shakes head*

I gather Gwen wasn't Ianto's cup of tea or should I say coffee?*tries to make a bad pun*

Tosh was 100 times the woman Gwen was.

Gwen probably thought Owen loved her but he was definitely just having fun. Casual sex was very much Owen's thing at that point but Gwen always had an over-inflated sense of her own importance.

Ianto could see right through her. She had a boyfriend she claimed to love, was having an affair with Owen, and was throwing herself at Jack.
