I Am In HELL!

Work has started on the house. This SHOULD be good news, however I've not been feeling well today (or yesterday), we've had an army of workmen trooping through the house stripping polystyrene tiles off all the upstairs ceilings (yeah, I know, but it was insulation back when you couldn't get much else), another team putting new lintels above the windows in preparation for the new windows next week, and we have no kitchen! What little there was has been ripped out (we still have cooker and fridge), so we have no sink or draining board and won't have until next Monday because the plumber isn't available until then =(

I kinda wish they hadn't started the kitchen until next week. There is rubble and dust everywhere, my rabbit is traumatised, and they've piled tools, kitchen units and worktops in the front room so I can't get to things I'd put in there so they were easy to get at, without squeezing past and climbing over things. Kill me now =(

*huge hugs* not that they do much, but I am thinking of you J and I wish I had a magic wand to whisk you away somewhere wonderful while all this is done so you are away from the stress... *sends a plea upwards*

Right now, I don't have the energy to scream! If I was feeling alright, it wouldn't be so bad. The workmen are good and very efficient (if messy, as workmen everywhere are.) It's just so noisy and the weather is so hot, and I spent all day shut in my room. On top of that, we still need to clear stuff for storage, but no one is available to take anything this week. I'm dreading when the electricians start.

Mum hardly did anything to help with clearing the kitchen yesterday, despite me not feeling well, so I had to do most of that myself as well as hanging out laundry - I swear I've done 30 washer loads over the last 2 weeks, using a faulty washing machine. I now have piles of clean sheets and nowhere to put them. It's all the stuff thst was in the airing cupboard when the pipes burst, which got stained, damp and a little mildewy. *heavy sigh* *hides under bed* They'll be back at 7.45 tomorrow *shudders* I'll be lucky if I get 5 hours' sleep.

You have my deepest sympathies, I've been there. when we remodled a few years ago, I ended up cooking on a camp stove on my back porch for a month and taking showers at my mom's for two weeks after the water was only gonn'a be off for two days. Hang in there, it'll all be worth it in the end.

Yep. in the end it will be worth it, but we've been in a mess since the pipes in the loft burst back in December and I had to spend three and a half months sleeping on the floor in the lounge. Then the heating packed up just before Christmas and we had no heat and temperatures of -15 and a damp house. It just seems we're in a worse and worse mess all the time and the re-wiring will be a nightmare. On the bright side, we'll have a decent kitchen for the first time EVER, with worktops and plenty of storage. Our kitchen is miniscule. Most people's bathrooms are bigger than our kitchen!

Thanks for your sympathy and understanding, it really means a lot! Right now, I wish I could just leave home, but being agoraphobic kinda makes that difficult! Besides, I have nowhere I could go!

I think it'll take about a month altogether, what with the kitchen, new windows and a complete re-wiring of the house! Plus the ceilings will need tidying, they have some cracks and holes and are a disgusting shade of brownish cream and flaking yellow. They've been hidden under the tiles for about 40 years!

Ah well, at least at the end we'll have a decent kitchen for the first time ever (miniscule though it is), plus double glazing and power sockets you don't have to crawl under furniture to get at!

Of course, then the whole house will need re-decorating, new flooring throughout, and something needs to be done about the damp, upstairs as well as downstairs (some of the clothes in my wardrobe got mildew!) And then we'll have to get everything back out of storage and try to fit it back in...

Maybe we'll be sorted in a few years *heavy sigh*

Hearing things like this makes me sort of grateful for the fact that I still live in an apartment! (Whereas usually I'm cursing the lack of space and the fact that we don't have control over anything? ^_~) It sounds like it's going to be amazing when it's finished though--I'm sure it will be worth it! I'm hanging on and gritting my teeth! Works finished for the day, the workmen will be back bright and early on Monday morning - not that we ban relax for a second over the weekend as we have to clear several areas by Monday.

The window people start Monday, but there are still two more lintels to be done and the kitchen can't be finished until the plumber comes - also on Monday, which is when the electrician is coming to look around and there is NO WAY he can get access to everwhere he needs because of the amount of clutter. He's supposed to start work on Tuesday!

I'm not sure 'amazing' is the word - this is still a small, badly constructed house from the thirties, with tiny rooms, inadequate storage and wonky walls. It's no one's idea of a dream home, and never will be, but it's all we've got, so we'll make do even though the damp will probably ruin whatever redecorating we do within a month.

Sorry, shouldn't be moaning at you, it's just exhausting and depessing as well as stressful.

I honestly think being surrounded by all your things when they're not in their proper places is one of the worst experiences. XD;; We moved across the country last summer and just seeing how much crap we had and being surrounded by it for days on end was a really unpleasant experience. @_@

I really like my routines and having a sense of order, too, so I think I would go nuts if I had people tramping in and out of my place like that, and stuff in storage. XD;;

*hugs* Moan away! <3 I do hope that it feels worth it in the end though. At least it will be an improvement, even if it doesn't last forever?

*hugs* Thanks, I'm a creature of habit too - I have my own routines and things mostly in their places usually, but now there's nothing where it should be. We've always been cluttered, Mum hoards everything even though we don't have much space, but now there are boxes of stuff all over the place and I can't imagine fitting everything that's in storage back in the house! I'll just have to resign myself to things getting worse before they get better! It will be an improvement, eventually. Unless the house falls down while they're working on it....

Wouldn't be so bad if we could send a couple more loads to storage, but the person who's been taking stuff to the unit isn't available at the moment, and there's no one else we can ask.

Ugh! I know how you feel. The day we got our kitchen put in, I woke up with a stinking migraine. I could almost spit from one side of our house to the other, it's so small, so I was in agony all day with all the banging. I couldn't enjoy the kitchen I'd been looking forward to until the next day.

*hugs back* Thanks! Our kitchen is so tiny - everyone else around here has had extensions built on their houses, but we could never afford that. It will be so nice to actually have work surfaces and enough storage space. I keep having to throw food away because it gets lost in the cluttered, overflowing pantry which is the only storage we really have, and goes off.

But with that, the windows being replaced and the whole house to be re-wired at the same time, it's a bit much to cope with! Doing the washing up is a challenge with no sink or draining board! We'll have to cope with that for three more days =(
We can't have a dishwasher because we don't have room. I wish I had a TARDIS, plenty of space in there!

Hanging on by my fingernails! Work will take about a month I think, it's the re-wiring that will be the worst - floorboards up all over the place, power turned off....

It's not even 8.30am yet and they've already been here 45 minutes! Mostly working on the kitchen today and putting in lintels above the windows. Monday they start replacing windows, which should be fun! I hope it's not windy when they do mine! My room always catches the worst of the wind because of its position =S

There's nowhere to get away from all the chaos!

Washing up is difficult at the moment with no sink, draining board or water supply in the kitchen! We can't have a dishwasher because there's no room!

I can imagine it must be a nightmare at the moment. Try focusing on how good it will all be once everything is complete. I know it won't help with all the stress and upheaval you are going through at the moment, but at least you'll have the end product to look forward to. (Does that make sense ? Sorry if it doesn't, but it kind of did when I thought it !)
