Title: For Luck
Author:
badly_knitted
Characters: Ianto, Jack.
Rating: G
Written For: Challenge 560: Shell at
tw100.
Spoilers: Nada.
Summary: Jack has an unusual lucky charm.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.
A/N: Double drabble.
Ianto was emptying Jack’s coat pockets, preparing it for dry-cleaning, when he found something. It wasn’t the first time he’d seen it, but somehow he’d never got around to asking his lover about it.
“Jack?”
“Yes?” Jack looked up from his computer.
“Why d’you have a walnut in your pocket?” He held it up, the shell polished and shining from frequent handling.
“Oh.” Jack looked faintly embarrassed. “It’s for luck.”
“You carry a walnut for luck?” Ianto had thought himself familiar with all Jack’s eccentricities but he’d never heard of this one before.
“It’s traditional on Boeshane. Should be a Bregelnut, but…” Jack grinned sheepishly. “They don’t exist on earth. Walnuts are similar though; when I rub it for luck it feels almost the same as a proper Bregelnut so I figured it was a good enough substitute.”
Jack didn’t talk about Boeshane often, so Ianto set the coat aside and perched on the edge of his lover’s desk, handing him his walnut.
“What makes Bregelnuts so special?”
“Bregel trees are rare and only produce fruit every ten years. Finding a Bregelnut is considered very lucky. They’re supposed to ward off evil. It’s silly, but…”
“It reminds you of home.”

Date: 2019-07-11 09:36 pm (UTC)Jack has lost everything from home and has no way of getting those things back, so he replaces them where possible with substitutes. His Bregelnut stand-in means a lot to him, he's carried it for a long time. Ianto is perhaps the only member of the team who would understand how important it is to him.
Thank you.

Thank you.
