Summary: Ianto cares for Torchwood’s inmates, but sometimes he wonders…

Ianto moved among the cells, feeding the inmates; Janet and Brad the Weevils, Cyril the Hoix, and Yuk, the weird rubbery thing that sat in a corner wobbling like a jelly.


‘Do they know they’re in prison?’ he wondered. Cyril was there because Hoix ate anything, including people, so he couldn’t be allowed to wander the streets. Janet was there for study and Brad because he’d turned rogue, becoming dangerous after losing a hand in a fight with another Weevil.


As for Yuk, it was there because nobody knew what else to do with it.


All were prisoners of circumstance.

The aliens being permanent captives has always bothered me. (Even more so after "Meat" -- if, after the Year, Jack empathizes so strongly with the Space Whale, why not the ones he's keeping in the Hub?) It would be one thing if they could live somewhere nicer, or with more space to move around in, at least. Maybe Jack could find an island or something, like Flat Holm.

One of my fic ideas involves the Doctor showing up, being angry about the situation, and finding ways to get the aliens back to their places of origin, or at least somewhere they can live decent lives.

I'm not keen on that either, so I have various fics where Jack asks the Doctor to take stranded creatures back home. Janet becomes a great help to the team and gets better quarters, or the same quarters just made more homey because she likes her cell. It beats the sewers hands down. Ianto is working on improving things for inmates, except for the ones that are actual prisoners, having committed crimes. Those get deported when possible, taken away by the Judoon ;)

Brad is healing after his amputation so he needs to stay in close quarters while he's being treated. Many harmless creatures live on a large plot of land Torchwood owns (I haven't posted that fic yet), others have the run of the lower levels.

Once they figure out where Yuk belongs, the Doctor will provide transport.

Jack and Co. are big Rocky Horror fans ;)

It's a pretty good prison by all accounts. More like a budget motel, really. You don't get pretty wardens in prison.

True, although a Weevil's notion of what's pretty might not be the same as ours. Ianto is working on improving conditions for long-term residents though.
