Doctor Who Drabble: Broken Bride

Summary: Donna’s wedding day is in ruins.

It’s nuts! The whole situation is completely nuts! One minute she was walking down the aisle in her wedding dress, the next she’s been kidnapped by a madman in a flying blue box!


That sounds like the worst thing that could ever happen to a bride on her wedding day, but it turns out it’s not; everything goes downhill from there, so fast it makes her head spin. Lance doesn’t love her; he’s just been using her to help some alien spider thing.


Donna’s hurt. She feels like a fool, but mostly she’s angry.


Even worse, she still loves him.

So true. She was marrying the guy, she loved him and thought he loved her, now she finds it was all a lie on his part, but for her it was true and real. Even now she knows the truth, there's still a part of her that wants what they had to be the reality, a desire to cling to the happiness she knew before she learned the truth. My heart went out to her.

Yes. That is exactly how Donna would think and feel. She talked herself into loving Lance (I don't think it was really real) and that was part of the reason she turned the Doctor down, initially. She soon thought better of it, and went looking for that "madman in a flying blue box".

I think she was desperate to feel loved, to have someone who loved her, and she thought she'd found that in Lance. She needed time to get over the betrayal and disappointment, but it made her stronger. She started to take charge of her life, made sure she would be ready if the Doctor came back, so she could take full advantage of the opportunity to expand her horizons.

Exactly. She grew more than any other companion (save Sarah Jane) and became an invaluable partner to the Doctor, his moral compass and best friend. What more they *could* have been is lost to time (damn RTD for leaving when he did).

Donna had so much to offer, I think she was well on her way to becoming the Doctor's equal even before she became the Doctor Donna. I wish RTD hadn't just pushed the reset button, sent her back to being the person she was before. She'd had such tremendous character growth.

That she did. He certainly was treating her as an equal. Which other companion did he teach to pilot the TARDIS?

I know a lot of people don't like this idea, but I do think that, had there been another year of them together (without interference by other companions), they would have grown even closer. There was a respect and affection that went beyond "best mates". But it was subtle and newly-born.

It could have happened, they were growing closer, and I believe Donna was better for the Doctor than any other companion. The mutual respect was important because he normally talks down to his companions, but not Donna. She stood up to him, she kept him centred, grounded, and they would have been amazing as a couple.
