Summary: Jack remembers something about Estelle.

Jack was slumped at his desk, so deep in thought he didn’t even Ianto enter.


“Penny for them?”


“What?” Jack looked up, startled.


“Penny for your thoughts.”


“I’m not sure they’re even worth that much.”


“Tough.” Ianto tossed a small coin onto Jack’s blotter. “That’s the lowest denomination we have these days.”


Picking up the coin, Jack studied it. “Estelle used to save all her pennies in a jar. When it was full she’d donate the money to a good cause.”


“She sounds like quite a lady.”


“She was. I wish you could’ve met her. She would have liked you.”

Yes, but sadly they never got to meet. Jack took Gwen instead, and she was really dismissive of everything Estelle believed. I wanted to slap her. Which is nothing new; I always want to slap Gwen.

Gwen was probably jealous of Estelle. It just made her look bad.

Gwen was jealous of everyone who had things she wanted. I think she was even jealous of Jack because of the power he had as head of Torchwood and because of his immortality.

If only RTD had gone that route and made Gwen have character growth. Missed opportunity.

She was just there. Unlike other leading ladies who have credibility.

At least in "Bones" they showed that Brennan, a qualified anthropologist was an amateur at using a gun.

I like Bones, she grows and develops over the series.

RTD is just crap at character development, especially when it comes to his pet characters. Any development of the other characters seemed to come from the other writers and the actors' performances. It was as if he wouldn't let anything about Gwen be changed, so she remained the same shallow, self-serving hypocrite she was at the start. Even Owen had more development.

Even her self defense was better than just punching someone in the face.

Since RTD moved Torchwood to America in the last series, you'd think he could have adopted the same principles of what a strong and charismatic leading lady would be?

It was pointed out that sometimes she was oblivious to people's perspective. It was because her mind was focused on other things.

I liked when she didn't get offended when someone tried to put her down. Booth got offended on her behalf.

I wish I could act like that sometimes.

Bones is a good role model, at least later on when she's started to pay more attention to other people's feelings. I love that Booth gets offended on her behalf, what other people think of her doesn't bother her in the slightest.

It's like it doesn't even register in her brain.

When she does get the upper hand over a psychopath or thug it's really creative.

I don't condone violence but that scene where she wacked the grave digger with a brief case.

I know. I wish they're wasn't such a thing evil beings. I really don't care why they're like that. Humans shouldn't be able to do such things much less want to.

Sure. You can inflict physical pain on them, but it's only temporary. They might even get satisfaction from it. They will still be scum of the earth.

There is far too much evil in the world, and too much hate and prejudice, but I live in hope that we can get better.

In religious terms evil exist to balance good. So we know the difference. I wish it didn't come at a cost. It feels like there is too much of an imbalance.

This is a very deep topic that I wish could be solved.

It has to be one of the deepest topics there is.

Very true about the imbalance, and it seems to be getting worse again with people using religion as an excuse for violence, hate and intolerance. =(

In Sci-Fi it is used as a metaphor.

Religion is a philosophy for life. All they have in common is that one should not inflict pain and suffering to oneself and to others.

Why can't skeptics be open minded to that?

Its the individuals who are evil that should be blamed. I'm disappointed that a minority corrupts the practice of faith.

I know! And he had to go on pretending that he was his own son. Although, I like to think she knew he was the same man she'd loved back then.

Poor Jack, so many memories and so many losses. I think Estelle knew I agree with earlier comment, Gwen always needs a good slapping.. Estelle would have liked Ianto, but never Gwen, who has no respect for anyone

I agree. Estelle tolerated Gwen's presence because it was the polite thing to do, especially since she was with Jack, but that doesn't mean she liked her. Ianto on the other hand, I think she would have warmed to immediately because he has such good manners. Unlike Gwen.
