Doctor Who Drabble: Lost Potential

Summary: The Tenth Doctor grieves for all he’s had to take from Donna.

The Doctor’s not sure how long he’s been sitting here, wallowing in misery, trying to drown his sorrows, but the bartender just rang the bell for last call. Pushing his empty glass across the bar, he says, “Fill ‘er up again, my good man,” and watches the amber liquid flowing from the bottle. It’s almost hypnotic.


Donna’s gone. She’d blossomed as they’d travelled together, fulfilling the magnificent potential he’d seen in her, being awesome, and now she won’t remember any of it. It’s not fair.


Picking up his glass of ginger ale, he drains it. Time to go on alone.

I just couldn't see him drinking anything alcoholic (although who knows what effect ginger ale might have on Time Lords), but that's a really good idea, so let's say he was drinking it in honour of Donna =D

The Doctor says he can't get drunk but then he is allergic to aspirin?. He pretended to be drunk in "The Girl In The Fire Place". He's biology is different to humans.

But I see it as a sign that he liked both ginger ale and Donna because they were both good for him physically and mentally.

I maybe reading into this a little too much?

I like that though, that readers tap into things I write and expand on them, it's always fun to see the insights that others come up with which hadn't occurred to me.

I think the Doctor can't get drunk on what humans would get drunk on, but maybe there are other things that hit a Time Lord's system in a similar way to how alcohol affects humans.

Ginger is very good, I love it, so maybe that's part of why I gave it to the Doctor, but I love the idea of him connecting Donna and ginger ale in his head. What better toast to a ginger than more ginger? Maybe if he drinks enough of it he'll eventually become ginger!

How does the Doctor keep healthy?. Did he use to go to a doctor?. Does he medicate himself?. He wonders how humans manage with just one heart.*rambling*

Time Lords probably doctor themselves, and their TARDISes probably help, but I'm sure there would have been medical people on Gallifrey. Maybe it's all part of Time Lord training. Regeneration takes care of the really bad injuries.

I bet the Doctor loves ginger biscuits!

I do feel sorry foe the Doctor never having someone permanently with him. It must be so lonley.

It must be. Companions come and go, but like Jack, nobody is going to live as long as the Doctor, he can only have each companion for a while.

I think that it was the loss of Donna and his guilt over what he felt he had to do to her that sent him off the rails and into Time Lord Victorious mode. While Eleven seemed to have put aside all that, it was nice to see Twelve acknowledging her importance.

I agree, Donna was like Ten's best friend ever and he knew that what he did was a betrayal even though he had no choice if he was to save her life. Damned if he did, damned if he didn't. Really it's not surprising he went off the rails after that.

Regenerating was a good thing, I think it left the memory bu not the associated guilt, allowing him to heal emotionally so by the time he regenerates into Twelve he's ready to start processing his feelings over Donna and what he'd had to do.
