Title: Doctor, Heal Thyself

Spoilers: The Stolen Earth.

Summary: The Doctor finds a way to heal without completely regenerating.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Doctor Who, or the characters.

When he sees Rose walking down the street towards him, everything else goes straight out of the Doctor’s head. It’s impossible, unbelievable, but she’s real, and he runs towards her.

He doesn’t see the Dalek.

The extermination beam just grazes him, but that’s more than enough. Gravely wounded, his body failing, his companions carry him back to the TARDIS.

He’s a Time Lord so he won’t die, at least not this time; he’s not out of regenerations yet. Still, he’s reluctant to let go of this body. Maybe he doesn’t have to. He shunts excess energy into his spare hand…

I wonder if that was RTD's plan all along. Otherwise Journeys End would have ended very differently.

I don't know, RTD has never really shown any signs of planning ahead, and I don't think he was the one who wrote The Christmas Invasion where the Doctor lost his hand in the first place. Or the Stolen Earth, for that matter, although I can't be sure without looking it up and I'm too tired at the moment to go digging. Seems more likely that he made things up as he went along, occasionally taking advantage of things other writers had introduced. The whole hand thing did work rather well though.

No worries. I didn't mean to be a bother. Just theorizing. RTD would have had to find some other excuse for the Doctor to reject Rose since he insisted on bringing her back.

Donna would have either continued with Ten or left when she found true love. Lee from the library perhaps?

The memory wipe was bad.

Theorising is always interesting.

Yeah, things could have gone very differently. Ten wasn't due to regenerate at that point, so either another way would have had to be found for him to say the same, or he would've not been injured badly enough to bring on a regeneration.

I rather wish Donna HAD found true love elsewhere, it would've been a better exit for er character.

Rose almost got him to regenerate again for her. She should have appeared subtly.

We wouldn't have gotten the dramatic "to be continued".

Although Eleven gets shot by a dalek in the series 5 finale.

I don't remember that, but then I've only seen most of the Eleventh Doctor episodes once, which is weird because he's my favourite regeneration. It's mostly because I don't have all the doctor Who DVDs yet - I've got Nine's Season and all of Ten's aside from the last set of specials, but only the first of eleven's and I think Season 7. I really need to get the rest.

Sometimes I really hate seeing 'to be continued' when they're leaving you on a total cliffhanger!

I thought the "TBC" was a bit dramatic. I don't remember them doing that for the previous series?

Of course we knew DT wasn't leaving yet so it was more of a "how does he avoid it" scenario.

I felt sorry for Donna because she had no idea what was going on.

Yeah, the fact that we already knew DT was staying around kind of took away from the cliffhanger. We all knew he'd be okay, so there was no edge-of-seat worry, it was just a case of wondering how he'd get out of it.

The Doctor should have taken more time to explain things to Donna, but he was more interested in Rose.

Why did Ten hesitate to answer Donna?

Was it because he wasn't sure?

Was it for dramatic effect?*you know RTD*

The way CT plays it as the Doctor turns around to see Rose, it was like Donna knew she was out of the picture.:(

Donna wanted to see him happy, even if it was with Rose.*tries but fails to put aside my own feelings*

I suppose when you're best friends with someone then you want them to be happy. Donna was selfless, such a good person, but I doubt that Rose would have been the same way if te oles were reversed.

Perhaps Ten was nervous, but more likely he was worried that damage might have been done to the veil or whatever it is between parallel universes. Or maybe it was because he knew he'd have to send rose back so it was bittersweet seeing her again. I don't know. probably even RTD didn't really know.

There wasn't enough time in the episode.
RTD ticked some boxes and left the rest for us to draw our own conclusions.

It just made Rose's characterization look bad.

RTD is good at making characterisation look bad. He's also got a habit of leaving loose ends hanging and never doing anything with them. Lazy writing. It's one thing if you deliberately leave lose ends that you intend to do something with later but with RTD it's more like he just can't be bothered to finish things properly.

He broke his "toys" so Moffat couldn't touch them. But he let Jenny live because Moffat suggested it though.

Strikes me that RTD doesn't play too well with others, he has to have everything his own way. Much like Gwen.

Jenny hasn't been used since though, has she? I don't think so anyway.

Where back to the issue of wondering what it would have been had DT stayed on with Moffat.

I wish the Doctor knew Jenny survived. I don't know if that will ever be resolved. Maybe RTD was just humoring Moffat. Not killing off someone for once?

Maybe so, but it annoys me that RTD leaves all these loose ends hanging, great potential storylines, but does NOTHING with them! It's the same with Torchwood. I always thought that if he'd wanted an enemy for Torchwood season three, he could've used Cell 114, the sleeper agents from the season 2 episode Sleeper. That could have been brilliant, but instead he re-used a script he couldn't get made as an original scifi project and we ended up with CoE.

Torchwood just became a big old mess which was so disappointing.

It could've been so great in the hands of someone who was invested in all the characters instead of just being obsessed with one.

That is why it failed. It should have been centered around Jack. What character development did Gwen have?

The rest of the cast were there to serve one purpose and that was to be killed off and make Jack mourn them.

The photo Gwen had of Owen and Tosh was to show that she didn't forget them?

I don't mind untangling things if I make the time for it. Although ear phones test my patience.:)

Tangled earphones are a menace, because you only find they're tangled when you want to use them =[

I know, the rest of the cast were cheated. the BBC wanted a team show, RTD didn't, so he created the team then killed them off as quickly as he could. Torchwood was supposed to be Jack and his team, not Gwen and those others in the background. and she really didn't develop as a character. I spent most of the tme she was onscreen wanting to slap her.

On the Miranda Hart Show, Miranda gets so annoyed with her tangled earphones that she cuts it with scissors. Not exactly practical.

Jack good, Gwen bad. I'm disappointed that only Gwen's ancestor gets killed off.

Definitely not a practical solution, but I can still sympathise. It gets so frustrating sometimes.

I do love Jack, I just wish he hadn't let Gwen walk all over him and get her own way all the time =[

Now they have earphones that don't get tangled but I still have the regular one that came with my Samsung.:)

Gwen was a pain in the you know what. She was way too stubborn for her own good. RTD should have given Jack a chance to tell it like it really was.

Really? Wow! I could do with some of those. I just use cheap earbuds with my mp3 players because the hard plastic ones that came with are too big for my ears and hurt.

I have Sony earphones that have good sound but are way too round for my ears. I notice that the cheaper ones don't last as long. The sound goes out in one of the ear buds. This is like a review or something.

Yeah, I've noticed that with the cheap ones, but I can get a pair for £1, so I don't worry about that too much.

I like Sony stuff, I always used to buy that make because it has such great sound, but quality costs. Ill-fitting earphones are just a menace.

That was one of the major problems - Gwen should have just been one of the characters, on an equal footing with the others, with Jack getting the lion's share of screen time, but she was pushed forward as if she was the star and the most important character.

Headphones are the best but not as compact for traveling.
Some people lose themselves too much in listening to music that they forget what is going on around them.

Yeah, sometimes I just wanted to stick my fingers in my ears when she was onscreen.

I have a set of small headphones I bought for mum, I'll have to see if they'll work on my MP3 player. Losing yourself in music is good as long as you're not out in public. It's really not good when you're driving. Some people are just dangerous!

I should have just press mute or fast forward on my TV remote.

Pedestrians or commuters as well. They don't listen to service announcements.

Good point - there re places where wearing headphones is a really bad idea because people can miss important announcements, or get in other people's way by not paying attention.

I vote for mute. Fast-forward might mean I'd miss a Ianto eye roll or something!

It is also annoying for bus drivers to repeat themselves. When it comes to trains people will ask other commuters or rail staff over and over. They don't bother to check the prompter. I usually get asked.

Yeah, people can be annoyingly stupid when the information is there but they don't pay attention to it. =(

I hate it when they ask at the last moment. Just wait for the next one if you aren't sure. Otherwise plan ahead. Taxi drivers have the time, not bus or train drivers. Then people complain when public transport is late.*sheesh!*

And then public transport has traffic to contend with, roadworks and other delays. They don't need passengers causing even more delays.

People find it easier to abuse a bus driver because they can't reach the train driver. My brother considered becoming a train driver because of this.

It depends on the circumstances. I'm aware of the dangers taxi drivers have to face.

There was a comedian who use to be a taxi driver that use to pick up drunk people hailing for a taxi because no other drivers would.

I didn't mean to disregard taxi drivers. I have friends whos husbands drive taxis for a living.

Their schedule would be structured differently compared to a train or bus.

The husband of a friend of mine drives taxis, and I have to use them to get to hospital appointments because it's nearly impossible to park there now. They've been so good. I know sometimes taxi drivers get bad reputations, but as long as its a reputable cab company, they're good and safe.
