Summary: Travel on other planets is largely guesswork.

After passing the third one, Ianto just had to ask.

“Jack, what’re those weird curly things?”

“You’ll have to be more specific, Ianto. Weird and curly is the order of the day around here,” Jack replied. He had a point; even the pale yellow grass was curly.

“The pink things like bent corkscrews sticking out of two mops twisted together.”

Comprehension dawned. “Oh, those things. They’re the equivalent of milestones, they tell people how far they are from the last village and how much further to the next one.”

“So how far…?”

Jack shrugged. “Didn’t say I could read them.”

Haha I know the feeling :P reminds me of the trip to Germany two weeks ago LOL I knew what the signs were, just had no idea what they actually said

Even when signs are in the correct language, there's still no guarantee you'll understand what they say. I think sign makers are deliberately cryptic!

The tardis gives oral comprehension but not written so ... I never reported on this- yes it is said he translated the conversation and that's it!
there are only the shrink paper for writing in the language.

The TARDIS does indeed only translate spoken words, but it gives Ianto something to learn ;)
