Summary: Jack faces the new millennium alone.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

The new millennium hadn’t got off to the start Jack had been hoping for. A few hours earlier he’d been looking toward the future with anticipation, even excitement; the century had turned twice, so his Doctor could show up any time now. The long years of waiting were finally drawing to an end.

Then he’d been faced with clearing up after Alex massacred the entire team.

Standing in the morgue, Jack gazed sightlessly at the uniform rows of drawers, the final resting places of the people he’d called his friends. How many more would join them before the Doctor came?

Jack's whole life changed when he had to take over Torchwood Three. It was a defining moment for his character.

A great look at Jack during what had to be one of the hardest times in his life. As old as he was, it feels like this is the point at which he really grew up and accepted painful responsibility. Too bad that even worse losses were in store. (As much as I love Torchwood, the more I reflect on it, the darker it gets.) Now I need to go re-watch "Something Borrowed."

Well, Torchwood was meant to be quite dark.

I agree, up to that point Jack was just an employee. When Alex killed the others, Jack had to decide what he would do. He could have left, but instead he decided to take charge and run Torchwood Three himself, and change it into something better.
