Spoilers: The Christmas Invasion.

Summary: With the Doctor sick, there’s no one to save the earth from the Sycorax.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Doctor Who, or the characters.

The earth is being invaded, but the Doctor is sick and getting worse; there’s nothing he can do to help them. They’re on their own and they’re completely helpless.

Rose wishes she knew what to do; she’s helped the Doctor take on the worst that the universe can throw at them. He always comes up with a plan and it always works, but without him she’s worse than useless. All she can think to do is to run and hide in the only safe place there is. The TARDIS.

She prays that the Doctor will wake up and save them.

And that's why Harriet Jones felt the need to take action at the end. It's clear the Doctor won't always be there to save the day. He is one being, very powerful and very smart/clever, but he can't be everywhere/everytime all at once. And sometimes, he is disabled by either illness or regeneration.

Yup, Rose saw how helpless she is without him (or a big gun)...

Very true, humanity needs to learn to defend itself, but they also need to learn which aliens are a threat and which aren't. Torchwood one wasn't good a that part.

Rose had to reassess her ability to deal with the extraordinary. She still has a lot of learning and growing to do too.

True enough, on both counts!

Yet there's still that niggling pesky problem of what to do if the Doctor isn't available... he will always try, though.

She was ignorant of a lot of things. She was at her best in "Dalek".

It was the start of Rose not challenging the Doctor anymore.

It's a long time since I watched the rose era episodes, so I only vaguely recall. I should do a re-watch sometime, but right now I'm re-watching B5.
