Spoilers: The Fires of Pompeii.

Summary: Some things can’t be changed, but maybe they can be tweaked, just a little.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Doctor Who, or the characters.

The Doctor loves earth history, there’s so many interesting bits; kings and queens and pharaohs, great writers and composers, scientists and astronomers who sometimes get things mostly right… Earth’s still young by galactic standards so there’s a lot that humans haven’t figured out yet.

It’s not all good though. Great civilisations rise, only to fall to war, or natural disaster. He can’t change things that are meant to happen.

They’re in Pompeii, it’s volcano day, and everyone’s going to die.

Donna’s not having it.

They can’t save everybody; fixed point. But who would it hurt to save just a few?

That is where traveling as he does would have to be so hard. All those fixed points he can't do anything about, the lives that could've been spared. That'd have to weigh damn heavily on his conscience.

I love Donna in that whole episode. Really one of her finest moments.

He has to harden his heart, but Donna shows him that it doesn't have to be all or nothing. He couldn't prevent the disaster, but he could spare a handful of lives.

I'm a big fan of Donna, the Doctor needed a friend and that's what he found in her.

I'd wonder how he could manage to do that, but all those centuries of previous experience building up would probably make it second nature to him. Besides, I'm pretty good at putting up walls, myself, so I guess I have no room to wonder. :)

So am I; she was fantastic. Exactly what he needed to stay sane.

He's seen so much, if he hadn't developed the ability he wouldn't be able to cope. Plus he's a Time Lord, he sees everything that was, will be, and might be, he must be pretty good at compartmentalising just so he can focus on his present without being distracted by the rest of time.

Donna was a great foil for him because she didn't put him on a pedestal. She's so down to earth. =)

I hope he can find somebody else like her sometime. He needs to not be worshipped so much. You've totally hit it on the head, there! Everybody's either falling in love with the man, or else desperately needing him in their lives for other reasons, and not knowing how to cope without. He needs another Donna.

We can only hope that the next companion is more like Donna. The Doctor doesn't need a love interest to keep the show interesting to adults.

Every female champion was infatuated with the Doctor at some point except Donna. She knew how to challenge and support him.

I don't get why some people dislike her so much. The Doctor obviously liked her.

She was loud sometimes because she was trying to compensate for her lack of confidence.

Even the Doctor can be annoying if you don't understand him.

Rant away! Some fans just don't like anyone who isn't Rose, and I don't get that either. Part of the fun of Doctor Who is the differing dynamics between the Doctor and his companions, each new combination shows us different sides of the Doctor. If it was always the same Doctor and the same companion it would lose something, and it wouldn't have lasted so long either.
