Title: Admitting The Truth

Spoilers: Gridlock.

Summary: Confession is good for the soul.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Doctor Who, or the characters.

He lies to Martha, telling her stories of the beauty and splendour of Gallifrey, saying he won’t take her there because he doesn’t want to go home. Been there, seen it before, travelling is more fun. He keeps lying until Martha backs him into a corner, metaphorically speaking, and compels him to honesty. Then it all comes out.

It feels good to confess, admit the truth. He wants nothing more than to go home, but he can’t, because home isn’t there any more: his world, his people, gone forever. The only thing he doesn’t confess is that it’s his fault.

Thank you. I think the Doctor was sort of trying to lie to himself as much as to Martha. If he didn't tell Martha the truth then he didn't have to think about all he'd lost.

Despite Martha's crush, she always challenged the Doctor when it was necessary. It was harder for her because Ten was so reluctant to be completely honest. Even though he always put Martha in situations where he would have to rely on her the most.

Yes, I agree. Martha was at an instant disadvantage just because she wasn't Rose. Ten had to rely on her at times, but he wouldn't open up to her, or confide in her. He kept her at arm's length yet expected her to trust him implicitly. That can't have been easy for her, always feeling that distance.

Even though Rose had influence Ten to be more people friendly, he instead was insensitive to Martha's feelings.

I think Ten was unemotionally available to anyone at that time. He just knew he needed someone after Donna assessed his temperament.

Yeah, and Martha was here, she didn't go to pieces in a crisis, and he thought, she'll do. He just wanted company.

The scene in "Smith & Jones" when they are on the moon and Martha's talking about the cousin she lost at Canary Wharf. You could tell that the Doctor is sizing her up. Ten was doing a mental checklist on Martha. Ticking all the boxes. Donna should have been more specific in her advice on having someone to stop him. For example she could have said: "Be honest about how Rose really left, and make sure she doesn't fall for you!. You big dumbo!".

Well, I don't blame Donna, she didn't know the Doctor all that well and I'm sure she'd have been more specific if she'd had more time to consider her ad=vice to him. Still, he did pick a strong, capable woman in Martha. I think the blame lies with the Doctor for not being ,ore honest and open with Martha. Then again, he seldom really opens up to anyone, preferring to hide himself away as much as Jack tends to.They're more alike than the Doctor would be comfortable with!

I think Donna was pretty good at profiling Ten with the limited time she had with him during "The Runaway Bride". The title of the episode is pretty contradictory.

Anyway the fact that Ten STILL stuffed up is only a reflection on him not paying attention to the little things that matter in the end. The more reason he needed Donna because she didn't idolized him.

The part where Ten asks her to come with him and she softly say's no. He goes all sad puppy face and she still resisted him. I thought at the time that woman is strong and knows her priorities.

Then the roles are sort of reversed when Donna track's him down, from the start of "Partner's In Crime". His the one who is reluctant because of what happened with Martha,(better late than never). Then everything was great until the end of series 4.:(

Donna had the maturity and had her head on straight, she wasn't flighty like the younger companions. At times she seemed almost maternal towards the Doctor. She took care of him and was his friend, and I think that's what the Doctor needs more than anything. A friend who will tell him when he's being an idiot.

I think that was the most endearing part of the Tenth Doctor's character trait. With the way he acted with Rose and Martha, it was nice to finally see a healthy partnership. He valued Donna when own mother never did. Too bad RTD did a reset on their relationship.:(

Sometimes I think RTD doesn't want any of his characters to be happy. He seems to see that as being realistic. Ten and Donna's friendship benefited them both. Donna found out she could do anything she set her mind to, and the Doctor had someone who would rein him in and keep him in line. He needed that, especially in than regeneration. Ten was a bit of a loose cannon.

Ten did go Time Lord Victorious. Indicating how dark the Doctor could be when his traveling without a champion to rein him in.

Since Ten wore his heart on his sleeve, he was very emotional but kept his personal feeling hidden.Yet he was the most open with Donna, compared to Rose and Martha. Donna could comforted him the way the other two couldn't.

The Doctor felt more protective of the two younger women. Donna, being older, could be more of an equal, he didn't feel such a need to shield her so he could allow himself to accept her comfort. A bit of a role reversal in some respects.

Donna: Is alright special Time Lord code for 'really not alright at all'?
Doctor: Why?
Donna: Because I'm alright too.

The Doctor was more focused on keeping Donna safe from danger.

Then they walk off together hand in hand. Which I find funny because in the previous episode Donna goes "Hands"! when she thinks the Doctor is trying to cop a feel.:D

Well I do know why, it's to show Donna didn't have a romantic interest in Ten.

Holding hands is a friendship thing as much as anything, a sign that they're there for each other in a purely platonic way. It's different to Donna thinking the Doctor was getting grabby.

Maybe it's more of a big deal to me because I never held hand's with my male friend's. But I get what you mean. My brother had female friend's who would be touchy-feely and it confused the whole just friend's thing for him.

Strange that Ten and Donna created a life through the use of their "hand's". Only in Sci-Fi.

I think touching that's not sexual in nature comes more naturally to women. Men have a tendency to misinterpret any physical contact. That wouldn't be so true with the Doctor because he's not a human man.

I guess it depends on how well the friendship is, so everyone knows where they stand.

In regards to my brother. I think it made him uncomfortable. He is more reserved with female friend's compared to how he would be with a women he was having a relationship with. I think his female friend's went a bit overboard because his not the type to flirt back.

Some women try to be more even when a guy wants to just be friends. Mind you, so do some guys. It depends on the individual.

Double standard's can go either way. In this case women can come on to a guy and it's no big deal even if he is not interested. Due to the fact that men are physically stronger so it shouldn't bother them.

It's certainly a complex situation. It depends where everyone involve is coming from.
