Summary: Owen’s not making a new start, just trying to put the pieces back together.

A/N: As with yesterday, this is the first of three drabbles for this challenge. The new prompt will be up tomorrow so I have to get these posted today or they won’t count. I was tied up with other writing earlier in the week because the deadline for that challenge was the 10^th, so I only got back to the drabbles yesterday. Cue the mad dash, lol! So much for making things easier on myself this year

Losing Katie broke something deep inside Owen; he knew he’d never be the same. She’d been his life, his future, his whole reason for living and now she’d been ripped away from him by something he couldn’t understand.

An alien incubating in her brain? It made no sense; none of it did.

He railed at the man in the coat, kicking and punching until he exhausted himself, then let Harkness take him to Cardiff. At least there maybe he could fight back against monsters he’d never known existed.

It wasn’t exactly starting with a clean slate, but it would do.

spot on. Owen's such a griper, but you can see that he's been through a lot. I think he hides behind the snark. Wish they'd had a chance to explore his character further in the series.

Owen had suffered a lot by the time he joined Torchwood, just like Tosh and Ianto did, yet we never really found out much about any of them until just before they were killed off. It was such a waste, and a cheap trick too, giving us hints about their lives and pasts, then killing them never to really be mentioned again. Thank goodness for fanfiction, where the characters can be developed and explored.

Poor Owen. He and Katie had every expectation of a long, happy life together--and then it was all taken away from them, by something he never even knew existed! He didn't even have his familiar world view--you know, the one where aliens don't exist, left.

Jack knew just what he needed, though, and in the end Owen was able to channel all that rage into something useful. Even if he still was a jerk a lot of the time. :-p

Very true. Of course, I think a lot of Owen being a jerk was just his way of protecting himself and keeping people from getting too close. He was still hurting and vulnerable, so he built walls around himself.
