Fic Of The Week - Week Thirteen

Amazingly, I didn't have any trouble getting through all 66,000+ words of Time Enough - probably due to feeling crap all week and not having the energy to do anything but read. Really great fic though, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of angst, sadness and boys not communicating, but a real sense of the team picking themselves up and carrying on at the end.

Back to two fics this week - a recent reel_torchwood fic and a much older one.

The first is milady_dragon 's The Ghost And Mr. Jones , 7 chapters of The Ghost And Mrs. Muir done Torchwood style. I love the film, so I'm excited to read this, even though it's taken me so long to get around to it.

Here's the summary:  After losing his wife, Ianto Jones and his son move to the village of Aberaeron and into the isolated Spitfire Cottage.  Soon he's dealing with clinging relatives...and the ghost of Captain Jack Harkness, the original builder of the cottage.  Little does Ianto know just how much of an impact the dead World War Two hero will have on his life. *bounces with excitement*

Fic number two for this week is a little 5-parter by lower_case_me , from way back in November 2006. It's called Containment and though it starts fairly mildly, by the end the author says it will be firmly in Adult's Only territory. The summary is short and to the point: A piece of alien tech causes chaos - but there's an important Author's note for Owen fans: Anything that might be construed as Owen-bashing is incidental, and will be made up for in subsequent parts. There's also no Ianto in Part 1, but the focus of the fic will be Ianto/Jack, so don't despair!

Now that we've seen all that Torchwood has to offer, I find it great fun reading the early fics where little canon has been established and the writers can only speculate. There are so many things that could have been, but didn't happen on the show.

I love the film The Ghost and Mrs. Muir - used to watch the old black and white movies on Saturday afternoons or during the school holidays. They don't seem to be on much these days.

I've never seen "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" before. It must be a British show?

An old British Black and White movie, not sure when it was made, 1940s probably, maybe 50s though it's set even longer ago than that, possibly early 1900s, not sure. It's a lovely movie, with Rex Harrison as the crusty old sea captain ghost. Can't remember offhand who played Mrs Muir. I can see her in my head, just not always good at remembering names. It's years since I last saw it. I used to be so good at knowing which actors and actresses starred in which movies, but a lot of those facts have vanished through the holes in my brain, lol!

You sound like me. I used to watch movies a lot and I could tell you who the actors are and what their names were in the movies too. I was kind of like Tony on NCIS! lol! I have the same memory problems too + I just don't watch as many movies as I used to. I loved it in my 20's living with my parents. It was my favorite escape!...probably like your fanfic.

I know the name Rex Harrison, someone my parents have talked about in movies. Oh gosh, we're old aren't we?! lol!

I loved Rex Harrison growing up - so suave and charming. I loved Doctor Doolittle (No, not the Eddie Murphy one, the original with all the songs and the giant sea snail) and My Fair Lady *sigh* such a distinguished gentleman! I was always a movie buff. Not so much now as I don't watch a lot of modern movies, unless it's science fiction, but when I was a kid I watched all the old movies on TV. In some ways I like them better than the movies that are made these days (with the usual science fiction exceptions)

I didn't think you meant the Eddie Murphy Dr. Doolittle. LOL! I've heard of it, but not sure I have ever seen the orginal one...come to think of it, I forgot the Eddie Murphy one at the momemt....ha ha! I think it was when he was wearing the weird fat suits, just "strange!" I might have him in the wrong movie though....If I had a memory!....I was singing that....be afraid....VERY afraid! I watched My Fair Lady when I was a kid, not into those now so much though. :) Must admitt I like mondern movies, but I am very selective. Some of them really suck!...and of course as you said, most Sci-fi movies. There are several coming out this summer that I MUST see. "The Avengers" which is more superhero, but I put them in the same category, lol! Oh and there is one that is a prequal to the original "Alien" movie that had Ripley in it. She is not in this one of course. lol! I saw a trailer and it looks so cool! They showed that huge strange man melted in the chair that we saw in the first Alien movie. I hope you've seen them, didn't want to give anything away...but since it is in the first one I don't think I did....not proof reading this one, afraid you maybe going to bed soon. lol!

I think the Eddie Murphy Doctor Doolittle he's a vet who can hear what animals are saying? Not sure, haven't seen it, only heard about it.

I'd like to see the Averngers movie, I grew up reading the comics and being Captain America, lol!

I'm so out of touch, I hadn't heard of the Alien prequel - sounds cool though! No doubt I'll read reviews then wait for it to come out on DVD, then wait again for it to come down in price to something I can afford! Maybe I'll get to see it eventually, lol!

Oh the Alien prequel looks so cool, ship and the actress I know her name, can't spell it. She's good though. Yeah, I have no idea how good it will be, but it looks more like the orginial Alien movies than the ones that came after. Like I said only the first 2 did I really like/love! The messed everything up, IMO, after 2....and they got SO bloody with stupids stories especially after the 3rd one. Not worth watching! ICK! I like good stories even in my gory sci-fi. :)

I wish I had been into comic books. That was my brother's thing. I love the movies made from them now. So much fun!

Oh, and we don't go out to the movies much at all. Too exspensive now. We only go if it is an exceptional movie with lots of special effects that looks good on the big screen and a really good story like we saw in the Harry Potter movies. We download/um? steal some of them, but if they are good we buy them on DVD. Bluray usually. The orginal DVD's from the stores are some much better quality and I wish we could buy more of them....oh well no time to go into that long horrible story of our past and debts. Things are mostly good now. I really hate the stealing part, Michael can do it and we wouldn't see much if he didn't.

My Dad did not approve of my reading choices, but I bought Marvel comics with my pocket money anyway! He threw them all in the dustbin one day when I was out though. After my parents got divorced, I made a point of spending what little money he sent me for birthdays and christmas on graphic novels, then told him what I'd bought. Revenge is sweet!

I love the X-Men and Spiderman movies, not so keen on the Fantastic Four movie, could have been a lot better (haven't seen the second one), and the casting of Reed Richards was, in my opinion, dreadful. The rest of the cast were good though. I loved the Daredevil movie but found Elektra disappointing. Loved Iron Man, still haven't seen the second one, haven't seen Thor or Captain America yet either. And of course I adore Hellboy - I've lost count of how many times I've seen it, Ron Perlman was perfect casting and John Hurt was so good too. Love that movie. Again, I haven't seen the sequel. Can't seem to find time these days for DVDs, too busy reading fanfic, lol!

Oh my gosh! I know I'm skipping down, but I LOVED Hellboy too! I watched several times too. Ron Perlman was absolutly the "perfect" choice. He is hysterical! Something about him, not the most attractive looking guy, but put him in make-up like Hellboy and the TV show "Beauty and the Beast" and he is well either cool like Hellboy or "beautiful" like in Beauty and the Beast! I loved the X-Men and Spiderman too. Can't remember much about the Fantastic Four though I know I saw it. I would like to see Capt. American, I may have told you some of this. Oh but you have GOT to see Thor! I loved the actors especially the guy who played Thor. It was serious and funny and Thor is georgeous...in my opinion. lol! I love Iron Man both of them, strange the first time I saw it, I didn't like it. I love them now.

You're Dad was horrible! A lot of parents, usually moms, seem throw away comic books. Michael said his mother did the same thing I think. Why do they think they are so bad? I do have a few graphic novels, but they are of "Beauty and the Beast" TV Show. Not sure that counts. lol! Michael grew up on comic books! He knows just about everything about them and the differences from the characters and things they did from the movies. He will tell me stuff sometimes that was different and I get so sad. I love happy endings. I "think" he likes "Marvel" the best, but I would have to check with him.

I am a huge fan of "Spiderman" the one they did last; I don't know about the new one coming out soon. The guy who played him...oh I just loved him and felt so sad for him. He was such a nice guy and was always having bad things happen to him, losing his job at a pizza place, people treating him badly. I just wanted to hug him all the time and the red-headed girl he loved was perfect. I could look up the names, but must eat dinner. I hopefully will be back later.

Of course Beauty and the Beast graphic novels count - I have one! It's the only one I've been able to get. Loved that show so much, Vincent and Catherine, such a love story!

I guess I love Marvel best, probably because that's what I grew up with, but I still like Superman and Batman too. I don't think D.C. comics have anywhere near as many iconic characters as Marvel do.

Tobey Maguire played Spidey (aka Peter Parker) Can't remember who played the red-head, oh I used to know all that stuff by heart! I liked the Spiderman movie with Doc Octopus best - Alfred Molina was brilliant!

I'll have to see if I can get Thor on DVD! =)

Oh wasn't that a great TV show! I have the only good seasons, 1&2 with Ron Perlman and (the only beauty!) Catherine played by Linda Hamilton who I love too. I think I have 2 graphic novels. They are in my closet with some other collector books I have. Oh I loved the show, Vincent didn't need to change into a stunning prince, he was already beautiful. Such a romantic story, talking in whispers and poetry. :)

I think that is what Michael said about Marvel comics too, but that he did love Superman and Batman.

Yes Tobey Maguire! He is so cute too! lol! I just loved him. Peter Parker, I knew that....my %$#! memory. Just looded up Kirsten Dunst who played Mary Jane Watson. I liked here too, I believe M said she looked like the character in the comics and he really like her.

I really think we are sisters! My favorite move was with Doc Octopus too! lol! I can watch that one over and over. I think it was Spiderman 2.

Oh I hope you get Thor and I hope I didn't steer you wrong. I really loved it.

We love so many of the same movies, I'm sure I'll love Thor when I get it. Me and my two schoolfriens used to play The vengers when we were about 11 - Debbie (my best friend in Junior school, ages 7-11) was Thor, I was Captain America and Julie (my best friend through grammar school and beyond - aged 11-19) was Iron Man! I lost touch with that Debbie many years ago when she and her mum moved. Julie I'm sort of out of touch with due to not having much in common anymore - she's married (to Colllin's older brother Dennis ironically) and has two girls, both probably in their twenties now. I saw some photos a bit back and one of the girls looks scarily like Julie when we were such close friends. Ooops, got a bit sidetracked there!

Better finish getting myself sorted for tomorrow, I need to make sure all my clothes are out and ready!
