Title: Fences

Author: [livejournal.com profile] badly_knitted

Characters: Jack

Rating: G

Spoilers: Not really, unless you don’t know who Jack was waiting for in Cardiff.

Summary: The heart can’t be confined.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: For [livejournal.com profile] mahmfic’s prompt ‘Fences’

A/N2: Okay, this is the fourth time in about 10 days – another one that’s come in at 100 words first try! That’s just nuts!

Jack had spent most of his time since he became immortal building fences around his heart, in a futile attempt to protect himself from the pain of loving and losing.

It never seemed to work, and yet he couldn’t keep from trying, always hoping that this time would be different.

Over and over, he told himself that love was a luxury he couldn’t afford. It made him vulnerable, affected his judgement, and anyway, it was pointless since he’d soon be leaving with the Doctor.

But the heart wants what the heart wants; no amount of fences can pen it in.

The End

Awww, poor Jack. I understand he doesn't want to get hurt again but his passion is a part of who he is! He has a big heart and would be much diminished if he somehow managed to fence it in.

Go for it, Jack! ;)

Aww. No fence is going to keep Ianto away from Jack.

You can always build the fence, but there's always a gate you don't know exists.

Jack humans cannot live without a heart that is free to love, fear and feel sadness.

This is because Jack is an idiot. It's just as well we (and Ianto) love him anyway.

100 words on the first attempt? Were you looking at the word count all the way through? Or are you just that good ;)

Oh, I understand why he does it. That doesn't change the fact that I think he's an idiot. He's only human, immortal or otherwise.

The perfect solution, really. I can actually see Ianto appreciating immortality, in a way: he would actually use it to experience the universe, to see everything that should be seen. And keeping Jack sane. There's always that too.

And now I'm picturing them breaking out of every prison in the universe because Jack has gotten them arrested. Again.
