Summary: Jack gives Tosh a gift beyond price.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

Jack agrees to the conditions for Tosh’s release without any real intention of sticking to them; what UNIT doesn’t know won’t hurt her.

He’s instructed to allow only limited contact with her family via postcards, but the first thing he gives Tosh is an elegant and expensive set of the finest stationery. The paper is pale lilac, thick but supple, the envelopes delicate ivory. It seems almost a crime to mar them with writing.

Tosh does so anyway, writing long letters in Japanese, the kanji flowing from her brush with increasing fluidity as she practices.

She can’t thank Jack enough.

Of all those Jack hired, Tosh was my favorite, next to Ianto and Owen. Her crime was serious but I loved the way Jack dealt with it. I suspect that Jack felt it was totally unfair to put such limits on her family contacts and that he was thinking of his own family when he circumvented UNIT.

It was a serious crime, but Jack - unlike UNIT - took her motives into consideration. She was trying to save her mother, not trying to commit treason (even though that's what she did) for nefarious purposes.

I think Jack would have wanted to show Tosh that he trusted her, because after what she did and what was done to her as a result, being trusted would have meant the world to her. It would have helped Tosh to trust Jack too, and prove to her that he didn't consider her a prisoner.

I think he wanted to show Tosh that he trusted her and that she hadn't exchanged one jail for another. That was why she became so fiercely loyal to Jack and Torchwood.

I love it when you capture these little things about Jack, to show how much he does care about people, how forgiving he can be, how much he understands what motivates people (of course, this is what made him such a good con man).

He gave Tosh something so small, really, but gained an ally for life.
