Summary: John wanted to win Jack back, but he just drove his former lover further away. He only has himself to blame.

A/N: For the prompt ‘When I Was Your Man’, one of the prompts I didn’t get around to using for tw100’s challenge 292: Billboard Hot 100 last year. I’ve dug them out again to supplement the prompts I got from my f-list, just because there are still loads I wanted to use.

John kept hidden, watching the ragged remains of Jack’s team lay their friends to rest.

He was mostly to blame for their losses. He’d let himself get conned, all because he’d wanted to return Jack’s lost brother to him; maybe win Jack back in the process. By the time he’d realised he was being played, he was trapped, a bomb bonded to his arm, compelled to help Gray carry out his insane vendetta.

Once upon a time, Jack would’ve turned to John for comfort; now Eye Candy had taken his place.

There was nothing left for him here.

He’d lost.

Poor John! He played the part of the villain so well it was shocking to find out that he in turn had been played. It's hard not to feel at least a little sorry for him by the end.

I think Hart IS a villain, but maybe not as black as he's painted. Obsessed exes are a pain, and Hart was worse than most, but I did feel bad for him. At least he didn't mean to do what was done, even if only because he couldn't profit from it.

He's as bad as Jack thinks, because Jack knows John intimately, but he still has feelings and regrets the pain he's caused. Mostly, he's pissed at getting tricked by Gray.

I almost feel sorry for Hart in this. He might have a twisted mind, but in the end what he did was only to try to make Jack happy. Sure, he had ulterior motives - and he never would have gotten what he wanted, which was Jack - but in his own head Hart really thought he was doing the right thing.

Exactly! He's still a villain, but he didn't mean for all this to happen. He started out actually with good intentions, but Gray was an even better con-man that John Hart and he got played. I feel sorry for him even though I wouldn't trust him an inch.

I kinda feel sorry for John in a way, he was used and abused by Gray as well.

He was, which was a novel experience for him - he's used to being the user, not the used. John is not a good person, but even so, he was still a victim. It's just that Torchwood suffered worse than John did. at least he realises that.

John had to have been shocked when his plan to win Jack back by reuniting him with his brother, and relieving the anguish he's lived with for so many years, backfired on him so spectacularly. I do feel some small degree of sympathy for him, the psychopathic player who got played by the even more psychopathic player, since he did actually do it out of his warped and obsessive love for Jack. It's too bad his obsession blinded him to Grey's hateful, vengeful agenda against Jack.

I think Gray is probably so twisted that he hid his hatred for Jack until he had John right where he wanted him.

Hart is completely obsessed with Jack to the point that I don't think he really loves Jack in the way most people would define love. He just wants back what he considers to be his. Still, he thought he was doing a good thing for Jack and I do believe he feels bad for what happened as a result, even if it's just because the whole carefully thought-out plan went so wrong.

I feel for him, but he made his bed and has to deal with it. Stalker ex-lovers are a serious pain in the ass and it takes a lot to make them realize the relationship is over. He's lucky Jack didn't try to hunt him down and kill him over Owen and Tosh. Only because Jack has a malfunctioning Vortex Manipulator is he relatively safe.

Yes, precisely! Still, at least he's accepted that he's lost, that he will never have Jack. Now he can just go away and lick his wounds and hopefully learn from the experience - just because he wants something doesn't mean he can have it.

I have a bit of a soft spot for him. He's not all bad, he could have just left them to it but he went back to help when Gray released him.
I wish we had seen more of him on the show, maybe joining the team. Would have made for some interesting and fun tension between him and Ianto! :-)

I kinda like John too, I think he's redeemable, he just needs to develop some impulse control. I've written a few bits and pieces with him in and I'm sure there will be more in the future.

He really does feel down in this one. He tried his best to do something nice for Jack and it all went so badly wrong.
