Author:
badly_knitted
Characters: Jack, the Doctor, mentions John Hart and Gray
Rating: PG
Written For: Challenge 315 – Drone at
tw100
Spoilers: Fragments/Exit Wounds, maybe Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Summary: Jack and the Doctor talk about Hart and related topics.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.
A/N: Part Twenty of the Drone Series.
Jack told the Doctor the whole story: his past history with Hart, the incident with the ‘cluster bombs’, Hart’s return and the devastation of Cardiff at Gray’s orders. He admitted his guilt over what had happened to Gray and explained that the punishment his brother meted out on him was justified.
“I deserved it. I let go of his hand.”
“Oh Jack, you are so wrong about that. Your father should never have placed responsibility for protecting your brother on your shoulders. You were still a child yourself; he should have protected you both. I’m so sorry, for all your losses.”
OoOoOoOoO
When work on the drone was completed, the Doctor grasped Jack’s shoulders.
“Forgive yourself, Jack. It’s time you let go of the past. Remember when Rose convinced me to let you stay on the TARDIS?”
Jack smiled.
“Those were good times, Doc; some of the best. You turned my life around, ya know. Whatever good I’ve done is because you and Rose believed in me.”
“I wasn’t sure but Rose, she was convinced that you were a good man. You just needed a little help to see that in yourself. She was right. She always saw more clearly than me.”
TBC in ‘Attitude Adjustment’

Date: 2014-06-01 07:38 pm (UTC)Not much more of this series, though there might end up being one or two little epilogue bits and I'll leave it open enough for a possible sequel if I ever find time to write it.
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying the spontaneous insanity - I just worked out that what I've written so far is made up of 42 drabbles! And it's not quite finished...

Date: 2014-06-01 09:55 pm (UTC)The doctor is right. Jack was just a child himself at the time. His father should never have fobbed off the responsibility of protecting Gray onto Jack. THAT was unforgivable. HE was the adult, their father, their protector. He failed abysmally in that role and brought unimaginable heartache to the whole family as a result.

Thank you!

Date: 2014-06-02 10:23 am (UTC)If they had to have Jack letting go of Gray's hand, then their father shouldn't have been there in the first place. They could have been alone on the becach, both terrified and trying to get to safety. Same thing, but without the irresponsible parent. Or there could have been a third, younger child that their dad was carrying while trying to keep the other two together... So many ways they could have done it. But no, poor young Jack ends up blaming himself when he shouldn't have been put in that position in the first place. *curses writers and pokes them with a pointy stick*

Date: 2014-06-02 10:31 am (UTC)So true. I think Jack BECAME a soldier so that in future he would be able to protect those who mattered to him. He was driven to it by what he saw as his failure, even though we know that what his father told him to do was nigh on impossible under the circumstances. It was their father's job to protect them both, but it was Jack who got the blame when Gray got snatched, and he took that to heart. So unfair. =(
Thank you.

Date: 2014-06-02 11:38 am (UTC)It's at least partly the Doctor's fault thast Jack's the weay he is - Jack sacrificed his life to buy the Doctor time after all - but Ten acts like Jack deliberately went and made himself immortal when it's the last thing Jack wanted. He expected to die and he's made his peace with that, only to find himself alive again and made immortal against his will. Jack is the victim, yet Ten treats him like he's guilty of a crime. Then uses him as convenient cannon fodder. Grrr! Well, my version of Ten isn't like that.

Date: 2014-06-05 10:50 pm (UTC)I'm not sure how Jack would get on with the 12th Doctor condsidering he looks exactly like Frobisher, the guy who put out the order to kill Torchwood and Jack as well as kidnapping Jack's daughter and grandson. I think he'd get along well with 11 though.
I'm not sure I really believe that Jack becomes a giant head. I prefer to think the name is coincidental and Jack remains Jack.

Date: 2014-06-07 11:15 pm (UTC)I just can't see Jack becoming a giant head. Even JB has said he's the Face of Boe but that dosen't mean that; look how Jack regenerated after being blown up and I did see a story where Jack regenerated after being capped by those crazy monks. With Ianto coming through the Rift after his little detour through the House of the Dead, those two would definitely find someplace to hunker down for a little peace and quiet. They surely can't depend upon the Doctor for anything and I think 11 would be the best one with Jack and Ianto.

Date: 2014-06-08 10:13 am (UTC)Jack really didn't have any choice but to sacrifice Steven. It was one child or millions, and there wasn't another child available, but he knew that by doing so he would be destroying his daughter's life and that it would kill him inside too. The government had backed him into a corner, but he had to make the decision and no one should have to do that to their own flesh and blood. He blames himself because he still feels that he should have been able to find another way, there was just no time. Really, the blame lies with the government for preventing Torchwood from doing their job right from the start. If they hadn't been forced to abandon their destroyed base and run for their lives, they probably would have found a way to defeat the 456 without anyone having to die. I always thought the whole plot was nonsense anyway.

Date: 2014-06-10 10:08 pm (UTC)Did the Doctor actually SAY that what happened was a fixed point or is that more of a fandom excuse for why he didn't come to rescue? Or something RTD said at a convention to cover up that he screwed up? I've lost track - mostly because I prefer not to accept the mess that was CoE as real in any way, shape or form. Most of the time I just ignore it. It never happened, lol!
