Title: Confessions - Sequel to ‘Begging’

Author: [livejournal.com profile] badly_knitted

Characters: Jack, the Doctor, mentions John Hart and Gray

Rating: PG

Written For: Challenge 315 – Drone at [livejournal.com profile] tw100

Spoilers: Fragments/Exit Wounds, maybe Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Summary: Jack and the Doctor talk about Hart and related topics.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: Part Twenty of the Drone Series.

Jack told the Doctor the whole story: his past history with Hart, the incident with the ‘cluster bombs’, Hart’s return and the devastation of Cardiff at Gray’s orders. He admitted his guilt over what had happened to Gray and explained that the punishment his brother meted out on him was justified.

“I deserved it. I let go of his hand.”

“Oh Jack, you are so wrong about that. Your father should never have placed responsibility for protecting your brother on your shoulders. You were still a child yourself; he should have protected you both. I’m so sorry, for all your losses.”

OoOoOoOoO

When work on the drone was completed, the Doctor grasped Jack’s shoulders.

“Forgive yourself, Jack. It’s time you let go of the past. Remember when Rose convinced me to let you stay on the TARDIS?”

Jack smiled.

“Those were good times, Doc; some of the best. You turned my life around, ya know. Whatever good I’ve done is because you and Rose believed in me.”

“I wasn’t sure but Rose, she was convinced that you were a good man. You just needed a little help to see that in yourself. She was right. She always saw more clearly than me.”

This series is so good. I wasn't expecting this turn of events. It's very compelling.

The doctor is right, Jack should finally try to forgive himself. It really wasn't his fault!
I wonder how many more centuries it will take until he understands that...

If there's anyone Jack would listen to, it would be the Doctor. Maybe Jack will finally be able to let go of the guilt and forgive himself now.

The doctor is right. Jack was just a child himself at the time. His father should never have fobbed off the responsibility of protecting Gray onto Jack. THAT was unforgivable. HE was the adult, their father, their protector. He failed abysmally in that role and brought unimaginable heartache to the whole family as a result.

Exactly! If he'd lived, do you think Jack's mom would have thanked him for abandoning their two young children and coming to save her, when she was safe inside their house? Somehow I doubt it. How many loving fathers are going to say, "To hell with the children! They can fend for themselves. My wife is more important."? Really??

This was one area of Jack's life that I never understood why he felt he deserved blame. There was no way Jack could have protected himself and his brother when their settlement was under attack and he was lucky not to have been injured or killed himself. This Doctor is a little more compassionate and hopefully Jack will realize he's right about that situation. Jack just has far more Soldier in his makeup than even he realizes. I like your Doctor much more than canon.

Agreed. I think all that came back when the 456 showed up and Jack found himself in the identical nightmarish situation wherein Ianto was the stand-in for his mother and poor Stephen was Gray. From there Jack went into a downward - I'd say suicidal - spiral that eventually led, to his being caught somehow and wound up being that Face of Boe thing. Jack's desire to die has so much of its roots in losing his brother; no one, especially a child should ever be put in that situation. You write Ten so much better than the canon; and for someone who needs a friend in the future, the Doctor should know better and quit that holier-than-thou attitude. (Love that icon!)

You hit the nail on the proverbial head. I think that's why I couldn't understand why everyone was so gaga over the Doctor but when I saw his attitude towards Jack, I couldn't figure out why everyone I knew who watched thought the Doc was so great. Jack is the Doctor's whipping boy and doesn't deserve that treatment. I blame the Doctor for what will eventually happen to Jack becoming that giant head as well; Jack simply does not deserve to have that happen to him. It's a monstrous insult on top of a horrendous injury. Frankly, I don't believe the Doctor's excuses about not being able to stop the 456 debacle and I have a tiny, sneaking feeling he was just jealous of Jack having found someone to love him like he should have been. After all, the Doctor lost Rose... I'd like to see how Jack would get on with 11 or the new Doctor. You treat Jack like he should be treated :D

I agree; those eps have been on all week and I just can't bring myself to go past Jack being entombed in the concrete. I still can't figure why Jack blames himself for his grandson's death; that was clearly a hostage situation and he would have lost no matter what.

I just can't see Jack becoming a giant head. Even JB has said he's the Face of Boe but that dosen't mean that; look how Jack regenerated after being blown up and I did see a story where Jack regenerated after being capped by those crazy monks. With Ianto coming through the Rift after his little detour through the House of the Dead, those two would definitely find someplace to hunker down for a little peace and quiet. They surely can't depend upon the Doctor for anything and I think 11 would be the best one with Jack and Ianto.

I agree; that plot was so full of it. I can't imagine why one would put their hero character in such a horrific situation. Jack didn't deserve this and neither did his daughter; even more, I can't imagine why the Doctor didn't come to help irregardless of his claim of this situation being a 'fixed point'. We only have his word that it was a 'fixed point' but was it really? Stephen was Jack's descendant as well; wouldn't that affect Jack's timeline or didn't he think of that? And I would say this is the second time the 456 took out Jack's family; after all, didn't they visit the Boeshane Peninsula and taken Gray? And then losing Ianto at the same time; an ugly 1-2 punch; no one deserves to be emotionally mauled the way Jack was. I think 11 would have tried to find a way.

I have to check with a friend who's heavy into DrWho but I know I've seen at least one story where Ten said it was a fixed point in time and I just don't believe that. I know I saw another story where Jack was pursuing the 456 and the Doctor intercepted him. If the Doctor claims Earth is under his protection, there's just no way what happened to Jack and the Children of Earth, especially if Jack was involved with it previously, should have happened again. I just don't believe CoE at all and I really don't accept the aftermath with Ianto being 'dead'. In far too many stories that I've read, Jack left a lot of his Vortex in Ianto and it 'shut' Ianto down, simulating death and Jack didn't know. I don't watch CoE nor MD.
