Summary: He’d waited for the Doctor, only to find he no longer belonged.

Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.

A/N: For the prompt ‘Stay’, one of the prompts I didn’t get around to using for tw100’s challenge 292: Billboard Hot 100 last year. I’ve dug them out again to supplement the prompts I got from my f-list, just because there are still loads I wanted to use.

He’d waited over a century for the Doctor to come, imagining how it would be, travelling through space and time again with the two people he loved most, his Doctor and Rose.

Only it wasn’t like that. The Doctor came, but not for him. It wasn’t his Doctor, Rose was gone, and he spent a year chained and tortured, his dream turning into a nightmare.

So he dreamed a new dream, of his Cardiff home, and of Ianto, his beautiful Welshman, who loved him despite his faults.

And he promised himself if he made it home, he’d stay there forever.

That was lovely. I kinda wish we'd gotten more of the Year that Never Was in the series, but since we didn't it's stuff like this that fills in the gaps.

Torchwood just sort of glossed over events, but then again, there never seemed to be much in the way of continuity anyway. Thank goodness for fanfic writers, filling in the gaps!

Ouch! What a poignant reminder that when we finally get what we want, it's often not what what we thought it would be.

Luckily Jack will get a chance to keep his promise!

He's found that what he thought he wanted isn't what he really wants, hopefully that'll teach him not to take what he has for granted in future while wishing for something else.
