My niece generally buys clothes or puts it towards a holiday. My sister almost always buys a new handbag, one of those expensive ones.

Oh yes, that's my favourite Star Trek movie too, Spock swimming with the Whales - it was serious and funny at the same time, because of the Whale conservation issues. I love Whales!

I watched most of the Next Generation - might have missed a few episodes here and there.

My first Doctor was the third, Jon Pertwee, then I watched all of Tom Baker's. I drifted a bit after that because I was in my teens and working, going out with my friend etc, so Saturday evenings I wasn't watching TV. I was so glad when it came back. The old episodes seem really slow and dated now but I did love them when I was little!

Christopher Eccleston was brilliant, I loved him. I loved David Tennant too, but sometimes Ten's attitude towards Jack annoyed me. He treated Jack very badly at times. I adore Matt Smith, he's really put the fun back into the Doctor. Ten got a bit angsty and emo towards the end, but Eleven is a delight!

BTW. I loved the "Robin Hood"...can't remember the name, Prince of thieves?...with Kevin Costner and a bunch of other people I loved! I need to watch that movie again. It was so much fun. No tights on Robin Hood, modern day cool pants. lol!

I heard that about Ten treating Jack badly from jedi_harkness I believe. So sad cause Ten seemed so cool to me, but I have not watched enough to know anything yet. I did get some impressions of him finally after my talk with jedi_harkness and watching some clips again. Why was he so mean to Jack. From what I understand, Jack's past was not so good. His character wasn't very likeable, he was a con-man I found out in TW episode "Captain Jack Harkness." But he changed in TW. Why did the doc not see how he had changed. He was so caring about his Team and humanity in general. Another reason why I loved Torchwood, season 1 and 2 so much.

Of course not seen Matt Smith at all. I have a lot to catch up on. lol! I'm glad he is fun.

Jack became a good guy through travelling with the Doctor, trying to be more like this amazing person he admired. But then he gets made immortal and the Doctor says he's 'Wrong' and he can't stand being near Jack because now he's a fixed point. He acts like it's Jack's fault that he's immortal when really it was the Doctor's companion Rose and the Doctor's own TARDIS that made Jack that way without his knowledge or consent. I wanted to hit Ten for those comments. He also doesn't care when Jack gets killed because he comes back to life again. He seems to ignore that Jack dies in agony and comes back the same way. I really didn't like Ten at all at times!

Some of the East Midlands is pretty - some is really... not. Depends where you are. I'll have to try to email you a couple of photos of Wollaton Hall which isn't far from where I live. I don't get out much, but I did manage to get there for an outing a couple of years ago. Hadn't been in years, but it hadn't changed much. When I get my own computer (which has finally got a new hard drive) up and running with all my files on it, I'll send some pics. They're not on this computer, which is borrowed. It's a lovely place. The Hall is a huge stately home which is now a Natural History museum and it's in parklands with a lake. There are even deer in the park. In Spring there are Rhododendrons flowering all around the lake, but when I went they'd finished flowering. Pity, as it's a wonderful sight. I took photos of the Hall and the lake.

Thank you for telling me about the past with the Dr. So awful. I don't understand it and now I have less respect for Ten knowing this. Why did Jack still think the doctor was so important and wanted to see him in the first season of Torchwood I wonder?

I would like to see the photos. :) It sounds beautiful. I would die without my computer. I hope you get yours back soon. My hard-drive has died more than once. It was awful! I'm glad I had most of my stuff backed-up. My husband puts computers together so he always fixes mine thank goodness.

I back up everything religiously, so I didn't lose anything (thank God! - it'staken me yearsto accumulate this much fic!) My boyfriend is fairly good at fixing computers (though he'salso good at breaking them, lol) so he fixes mine when something goes wrong. He got me laptop after laptop, all of which were old ones he'd fixed, until he dedided I knew enough to have a good, brand new one. When that one broke, i bought myself this one - which isfixed and has all my files loaded again, though it'staken me most of the day. Yay! I haz my Ianto back!

Jack was eager to see the Doctor because he wanted answers. He wanted to know how he had become immortal, why the Doctor had abandoned him on the Gamestation in the future and whether the Doctor could fix him and make him mortal again. The Doctor wasnn't exactly helpful, couldn't fix Jack and I think Jack realised he needed to get on with his life an Earth so he asked Ianto out.

I'll try to send some photos in the next few days, though I might have to send them separately, so you might get several emails!

Hey! I kept thinking I answered this one, but I think I just read it. Sometimes I just feel too bad to type. Today is going better, as you can tell from the book I just wrote on another post, I think I told you already.

I need to back up my files again. I keep procrasting on it and I hope my hard-drive doesn't die anytime soon. lol! Michael does have it mirrored which he says if one dies then the other still has all my info on it which is 4 thousand icons and pictures mostly of Jack and Ianto! lol!...My most important stuff stays back up everytime I add it, being my little boy Alex. I have his pictures in several places.

I have some fanfic, but mostly links to places to read them, bunches of old I want to read. Oh you mean you back up the stuff you write. I have never written a fanfic. Not sure I could.

Ok, I think I am beginning to understand the relationship between Jack and the Doctor. Very strange the way Ten acted, and it makes sense that Jack would want to see if he could be fixed though in the end we found out that Jack wanted to stay immortal in season 4. if you watched it. I think you said you didn't. Well he said it in Season 2 on the first episode...I guess it was because he became mortal again and it made him question it again. I hope I haven't ruined things. I believe you meant you didn't watch it and didn't want to anyway....so it is ok to spoil it. I'm crazy!

You're right, I didn't watch Miracle Day and I'm not going too, lol! It's just not my Torchwood. I know more or less what happened because I read reviews, just to see if it was as bad as it sounded!

Oh, I back up loads of fanfiction, not just what I write (I've only written a handful anyway). I download anything that looks interesting, then I can read even when I'm not online, if the internet goes down or whatever! I think I have over 2000 complete series (some are Doctor Who or crossovers) and over 1000 series that aren't complete but I add new chapters when they're posted. I'll comment on them when I read them. It does make it easier to find them online because I know the date they were posted. It'll make it easier to pick series for my weekly series reading challenge! I've got over 20,000 short stories probably, then loads of 2, 3 or 4-parters! In my weird ex-librarian mind, I don't consider a story to be a series until it's at least 5 chapters long, lol!

I've got thousands of icons saved as well. And a lot of other Torchwood pictures - wallpapers and manips and a few screen captures.

Wow! That's a lot of fanfic! I will NEVER keep up with you. I haven't even started the first one. lol! I've lost already on your weekly challenge. I wish I was a speed reader!

I may start collecting stuff fanfic too, just never seem to have the time + I am trying my hand at making icons from TW pics mostly with an editing program I downloaded. So far really only got two that I really liked and uploaded to my user pics. I may have one more that was so-so on there. Not sure if I took it off.

I would like to learn more about making icons, I can't put words on them. I see others with great backgrounds and words (different fonts) and so on. I take captures and try to lighten them usually for wallpaper for my computer.

I had no idea, but there are very "few" pictures of Ianto and jack where you can see them at the same time, you know side by side or like when Ianto sat on Jack's desk before they kissed. Plenty of them individually, but I want wallpaper with them together. It is always some very serious or sad shot too. TW shows are very serious though and I heard Dr. Who has always been on the dark side too, just more for a family audience than TW. RTD doesn't believe in happiness except for a few jokes between characters I guess.

I did think Ianto's humor in S2 was the BEST ever. I just loved his dry/welch humor! He was a darling.

Just because I have all those series and stuff doesn't mean I've READ them yet, lol! I have A LOT to read, somewhere in the thousands. It may take me the rest of my life to read them, but at least they're there in case the writers delete their accounts. That's happened so often.

I managed to read 2 chapters last night, and one chapter on each of the previous 2 nights, so I'll read the coda tonight. I'll try to post about my weekly fic each Monday I think, hopefully that will work. I hope you do get a chance to read this one as I thought it was excellent.

I have no idea at all how to make icons, though I'd like to. Not that I have time to take up something else right now, but at some point it would be fun to try. I'd like to make some out of photos I've taken.

Oh yes, Ianto was really funny in Season 2 - I think Jack brings out that side of him, the more lighthearted side, because being with him makes Ianto happy! That was seriously missing in CoE, all the light-hearted stuff. It was far too gloomy for me. Torchwood is dark but optimistic, CoE was dark and hopeless. Doctor Who can be dark and scary, but it's fun too, and things usually work out in the end.

Shoot i have to go right now, but wanted to say, I agree about COE. being dark and hopeless. Ianto and Jack's grandson dying. I couldn't believe Jack would kill his own grandson. I know it was the only child there, but killing "any" child not to mention he was his grandson even to save the world was just horrible to me!

We love Star Trek and you notice how even when it seems immpossible, the captain always finds a way without killing his or her crew. Ok, it is fantasy, always happy endings...but it sci-fi! Anything can happen in science fiction! So why does Jack only way out to save the human race is to kill one person...RTD looks at it that way. I think I would find another way to save us, or just let us all die before I would kill someone, especially a child. Stupid RTD! Not sure I worded this right, I'm being rushed by my husband. lol!

Yeah, I agree, though I blame the government idiots for backing Jack into a corner where he really didn't have much choice - kill one child, or allow millions to be used as drugs by the aliens? That's a choice no one should have to make and it's just too ugly and sickening an idea for a TV show that is supposed to be entertainment. That didn't entertain me at all! It must be an ugly place inside RTD's head if he thinks things like that are what people want to watch!

I wanted you to know I read this and I agree with everything you said. I would have never wanted to be put in Jack's position, who would? I'm not sure I had thought that all out until you told me your views on COE. Also the constant torcher of Jack, lets see how many times we can kill him, Finally they realized they couldn't and put him in cement. Only good part was Ianto's rescue! I loved that.

I really hate RTD and shouldn't hate anyone. I just don't understand him. Take a great show with great characters, kill most of them off and break our hearts. I loved them all even Gwen at first, not so much now. I watched them on DVD., not live TV. and just couldn't believe how it went from so cool to just horrible at the end of COE. Who are these people we'd loved...though Ianto always stayed sweet and caring to me, and a hero.

That's the way to run a potentially successful series into the ground - destroy everything the audience likes about a fun and slightly goofy show and try to use it to make political and social .

I have to admit I didn't like Gwen in the first episode and she went downhill in my opinion from them on. In the first episode, she left her post while she was on duty in order to spy on people she's been told are Special Ops, lied to Rhys for no reason whatsover, acted like an idiot during the bar fight and got hurt, then got a caretaker killed at the hospital, then abandoned her partner and took the patrol car... And I'm supposed to identify with and admire this woman? No way. The only reason I could think of for Jack hiring her was because he wasn't thinking clearly after being shot through the head. So much could have been done with the character, but every single opportunity was wasted. If she'd been an investigative reporter, some of her behaviour (the nosiness) would have made more sense, but she's supposed to be a police constable, someone who knows the importance of chain of command and following orders...

This is a really old post that is getting skinny down the side of the page, but I just wanted to say, I liked Gwen at first, didn't really catch all that....but then she bacame real bossy with jack, still wasn't sure what to think about her. I just watched everything play out without thinking in S-1 and S-2.

In ummm? himmm? heee? the 4th series she bacame worse hard and cold most of the time. The only thing I liked about her was she could "really kick ass!"

Carrying her baby and walking straight ahead, determinded look on her face while shooting through her window at a hellicopter heading for her house. She didn't take any crap from anyone!...but that was about it.

I thought of that too and it is confusing. I guess she was leaving the house and trying to protect her baby at the same time. Gwen looked like Ramboo or Ripley from "Aliens"..... well kind of...she is "not" even in the same class as Ellen Ripley, my hero!

There were plenty of other times she kicked-ass once she arrived in American with Jack. Baby safely back in England/Welch country?...with daddy. I can't explain it, she just cracked me up when she would tell some thug to get his hands off her, pitching a fit, or have her gun aimed at someone with her attitude. It worked for her there, but it did not make her a nice person around others that were suppose to be her friends. She was hard and abrasive, my husband thought.

I never found Gwen to be kick ass, she just didn't seem believable even as a PC. Maybe in S4 she was, but I doubt I would have enjoyed that anyway. I never found her kind and caring, either, she mostly seemed patronising to me. I wish Jack had recruited PC Andy or DC Swanson instead, lol!

No one is a more kick ass than Ripley! That just would not be possible! Sarah Connor in T2 was pretty good, but Ripley is number one!

What I don't get is they often had looks between them, romantic looks between Jack & Gwen...even at her Marrage!...what was with that, only "after" that show did he seem to really be interested in Ianto as more than just a guy to shag. I know Ianto always believe their relationship was more than. I did love Ianto breaking in and dancing with Jack instead of Gwen. That was fantastic!...but stupid Jack was still looking back at her. Pissed me off!

I always wondered if Jack could really love anyone anymore because he had lived so long caring about people only to watch them die. Maybe he couldn't say "I love you" to Ianto because it would just hurt too much though we all know now, he did. :*(

Unfortunatly we only found out in the radio play, I mean I'm glad he finally said it, but I wanted him to say it on the show....not the horrid COE...or say it in COE. somewhere, when he was dying back to Ianto!...though that would be my last choice because dies! He is still alive as far as I'm concerned. :)

RTD is just obsessed with Gwen - if anyone else had been running the show, the supposed 'attraction' between Jack and Gwen would have been dropped as soon as it was realised that it didn't really work. It just made Gwen look bad - loyal boyfriend who adores her, yet she's having an affair with her co-worker while lusting after her boss.

I always thought it wasn't about Gwen in particular at her wedding, just that she was the bride and he was remembering his own wedding. Plus, Jack always flirts with everyone, so I never considered he was particularly attracted to Gwen, she just wanted to believe she was special in his eyes. A lot of the time when he looks at her, he just looks annoyed. There didn't seem, to me at least, to be any chemistry there. And anyway, throughout the whole of the 3 series (I completely ignore Miracle Day because to me that's not Torchwood), Jack was never seen to be getting any action with anyone but Ianto. He never made a move on Gwen and if he wanted her that badly, nothing would have stopped him. I think he just enjoyed her hero worship of him.

I read early on RTD actually was thinking they would kill off Ianto sooner than they did. (I think?) then something happened, good I guess, maybe the chemistry between Jack and Ianto, I don't know. It was so "obvious" at least the way they wrote it & I guess RTD wrote it too?... and for a "second" he must have realized it, only to screw it up in COE., because "no one in "reality" can live long while being part of TW" (not a direct quote)...hey dumbass! This is Sci-fi! Anything CAN happen in it! Do you ever watch any?!
Dumb sh%$^#! If the fans wanted reality, they would watch a heavy duty, based on true life drama-shows or movies! I want to have fun not cry and feel bad!...worry well who going to die next that I love!

I saw no chemistry either, though they wrote it like there was...did I miss that? They spent a lot of time together talking. He wanted "her" to drive him to the place he killed Abagon. "She" stayed with him and believed he would come back to life instead of Ianto who seem to hide in the back ground believing he had lost his Jack forever.

Also I know you didn't watch S4, I don't know why I did? I just love Jack I guess, but it mostly sucked. Gwen seem to take over and they made out like Jack was only gay because it was likely that no one in American knew anything about Jack. He was a whole other Jack, who didn't flirt anymore. He was still the hero, but he didn't seem like the Jack of the old TW. I am sure RTD wanted it that way, new and fresh I think he said. He thought a show would be cancelled if it wasn't changed.

NCIS is still going and is in it's 9th season right now (so far only one member died and she was not one I liked much and it was early in S2) not Sci-fi, but still RTD might want to check out a few of the long running shows we have and have had here for many years, excluding the dumb-ass reality shows, which I will not watch, they damaged brain cells in my opinoin. LOL! If you like them oops! Not sure what they show in the UK.

You are probably right about the hero worship Jack liked from Gwen, but why did he say he came back for "her" like he wanted to marry her (in my opinion) when he returned in S2. It was their talk when he found out she was going to marry.

Why is RTD obsessed with Gwen? Who knows! He seems to be under the impression that she's what all women aspire to be. Really, really NOT. If I was Gwen, I'd throw myself under the nearest bus. I have nothing against flawed characters if they learn from their mistakes and grow, or if they are treated as flawed. Gwen was treated as some kind of untouchable saint who was so special, nothing bad would ever happen to her, despite all the times she screwed up and had to be rescued and despite the way bodies piled up around her.

Anyway, I agree with everything you say, I just cannot understand why she was repeatedly shoved down our throats. I didn't find her remotely likeable. I hope there won't be more Torchwood on screen (unless it's a complete reboot) because if there is, it will be all about Gwen. *sigh* She was the least interesting character and we knew everything about her. We only found out anything about the others when they were about to die. So much potential wasted.

I agree, if all the others are at such risk, can die anytime, why is Gwen any different?! She's not immortal like Jack. RTD contradicts what he just said about the dangers of working in TW. Gwen must have an angel that watches over her and makes sure she is not one of the "lucky" ones that die each season.
