“I’m sure I’ve seen something like this before,” Jack said, sitting at his desk and staring at the curious object he and Ianto had just retrieved after the Rift had dropped it in a smelly dumpster behind the Indian takeaway.

“You say that about a lot of things,” Ianto reminded him. “Most of the time you’re wrong.”

“Aha, but that’s when I think I can identify them, not when I’m sure I know but I can’t remember.”

“Well, while you sit there and ponder our mysterious new artefact, I’m going to take a shower. I stink of curry. So do you, for that matter. You might want to think about showering yourself.”

“Mm,” Jack agreed vaguely. Ianto had a feeling his lover hadn’t heard a word he’d said. If he had, Jack would’ve been racing him to the showers.

When Ianto returned, smelling much fresher, Jack was still sitting at his desk, staring at the object, only now he was slapping himself repeatedly on the head. That was odd, even for him.

“Jack, what exactly are you doing?”

“Trying to jog my memory.”

“The only thing you’re likely to do is give yourself a concussion. That won’t help you remember.”

The End

There are few things more annoying than knowing you know something, but just can't call it to mind. Either Jack will remember in time, or Tosh will figure it out, with no concussion involved
