“So.” Dee handed Ryo a mug of coffee and dropped onto the sofa beside him, setting his own mug on the end table. “What did you wanna talk about?”


“Remember when the Chief called me to his office earlier?”


“Like I’d forget that. It’s usually me gets called in and chewed out over some minor infraction of the regs. You said it was nothin’ though, he just wanted to ask you somethin’, right?”


“Well, it was more of an offer than a question. He wanted to know if I’d be interested in heading up a taskforce to crack down on domestic slavery.”


“Damn, that would be quite a feather in your cap!”


“I know; I don’t get offers like that every day. I told Chief Smith I’d think about it.”


“Seriously? I would’a thought you’d jump at the chance.” Dee’s eyes narrowed. “So what’s the catch?” He was smart enough to know there had to be one if Ryo was hesitating.


“I’d have to move to DC for six months.”


Dee’s heart sank; they’d been living together less than a year, but…


“Do it. I’ll visit whenever I can.”


“Are you sure?”


“We’ll make it work, babe. You’ve earned this.”
