Lazing on the foredeck of their boat, watching gulls and other seabirds drift and soar on the air currents, Dee sighed.
“As much as I love bein’ out on the ocean, I can’t help kinda envying birds. Imagine how it would feel to float on the air the way this boat floats on the water, to be free to go wherever we wanted, and see the world from above.”
“We do that every time we fly somewhere,” Ryo murmured drowsily, stretched out on his stomach, head pillowed on one arm, the other hand still holding the book he’d been reading before the warmth of the sun had made him feel too sleepy to concentrate.
“Not the same thing, babe. Ya can’t feel the air rushin’ past ya when you’re in a plane, and anyway, planes fly too high for passengers to see much of anything.”
“Mm, I guess.” Ryo yawned and closed his book. “Think I’m gonna take a nap.”
Dee grinned to himself; it was good to see his workaholic partner so relaxed. “’Kay, guess that’s my cue to shut up. Sweet dreams, baby.”
There was no reply, but Dee hadn’t expected one. Silence fell between them, and Ryo soon dozed off, but while his lover slept Dee continued watching the gulls and wishing he could see the world the way they did. It would be awesome to be a bird, but since he wasn’t one and never would be, it was something he was never likely to experience. All he could do was daydream, trying to imagine what it would feel like.
He didn’t mention it to Ryo again, there were plenty of other things to talk about, and the rest of their short cruise passed far too quickly. Before they knew it, they were back at the marina, mooring the boat in its slip, and wishing they didn’t have to return to work the next day. With crimes to investigate, Dee’s longing to soar like a bird on the wind was soon pushed to the back of his mind.
A few weeks later, leaving work with three days of freedom ahead of them, Dee asked his lover if they were going to spend their leisure time on the boat, as they usually did whenever the opportunity arose. The forecast promised glorious sunshine and a brisk wind, following the spell of wet and stormy weather that had kept them at home since their last trip.
“No, not this time.” Ryo smiled at his partner. “I’ve got something else planned, kind of a surprise.”
“Yeah? Cool, I like surprises. Well, long as you’re not draggin’ me off campin’. You’re not, are ya? I mean, I’ll go if that’s what ya want, campin’ does have its advantages, but I gotta admit it’s not my favourite thing in the world.”
Ryo laughed. “No camping, I promise; I’ve booked us into a hotel.”
That brought a smile to Dee’s face. “Now hotels I like. Room service, comfy beds, phone reception…”
“All that and more,” Ryo promised. “Come on, we’d best get home and pack our bags. It’s not a long drive, only about an hour and a half, so if we leave right away, we can be there by dinnertime. I booked us in for three nights.”
“Great, let’s get this party started! The sooner we get there, the more time we’ll have to enjoy ourselves.”
Laughing at his lover’s eagerness, Ryo led the way out to the car, and they headed back to their apartment to get the long weekend underway.
There turned out to be a lot more to Ryo’s surprise than a few nights in a hotel. The following morning, he told Dee why they were there.
“Remember a few weeks back, when you said you wanted to know how it would feel to fly like a bird? Well, we’re going hang gliding. I know it’s not quite the same, but it’s as close to being a bird as you and I will ever get. We’ll be going up with a couple of experts.”
“Seriously?” Dee couldn’t believe his partner had gone to all this trouble over an idle comment from weeks ago. “That’s frickin’ awesome!” Unable to contain his excitement, he swept his lover into a passionate kiss. “You’re amazin’. Thank you!”
“You’re welcome. Now come on, we don’t want to keep our instructors waiting.”
“Yeah, that wouldn’t do at all.” Grinning all over his face in anticipation, Dee practically bounced out to the car, Ryo following, laughing, and shaking his head. Even at thirty-five, Dee was still a big kid at heart.
Less than an hour later, Dee found himself at the top of a grassy hill, being strapped into a safety harness slung beneath a hang glider. The instructor strapped in beside him, issuing instructions through the headset radios they were both wearing. Dee listened intently, asking occasional questions, and then it was time for the flight to begin.
“Okay, are you ready?” Danny the instructor asked.
“You bet I am!” Dee’s grin was so wide it made his face ache. Gripping the bar in front of him, he matched his stride with that of his instructor as they ran forward, felt the tug as the wind caught the wings of their glider, and suddenly it was as though the ground was falling away beneath them as they were swept outwards and upwards.
The wings weren’t his own so there was no flapping required, which was no doubt a good thing, but soaring on the air currents, looking down at hills and valleys, rivers, meadows, lakes, and forests, Dee imagined this was exactly how it must feel to be an eagle. He didn’t think he’d ever known such complete freedom.
Turning his head, he could see Ryo and his instructor, slung beneath a second hang glider, rising fast as it caught a thermal. Through his headset he could hear his lover’s delighted laughter, and he whooped from the sheer exhilaration.
“WOOOHOOO!”
“Isn’t this amazing?” Ryo said in his ear.
“Unbelievable! It’s like bein’ practically weightless, we are SO doin’ this again!” Dee replied as the glider he was suspended from turned in a lazy spiral, gaining height. The way he felt at that moment, given half a chance he might be tempted to stay up there forever.
He loved being on their boat, far from civilisation. It was great being able to get away from it all whenever they wanted, weather permitting, but as free as that made him feel, this was even better. Maybe he’d been a bird in a previous life.
Ryo had introduced Dee to a lot of fun activities, but this was by far the best. He would have to think of some special way to show his appreciation for his lover’s thoughtfulness, but for now he just wanted to experience the full wonder of seeing the world from a bird’s perspective. Birds had no idea how lucky they were.
