Fandom: BtVS

Characters: Buffy.
Rating: PG
Written Using: The dw100 prompt ‘Emerson Quote’.
Setting: Before Season One.
Summary: Buffy never asked to be the Slayer.
Disclaimer: I don’t own BtVS, or the characters.
A/N: Triple drabble.

When she was a child, Buffy had never seen herself as different. She’d been just the same as her cousin and the other kids she’d played with, one more ordinary little girl, no better, smarter, or stronger than they were.

But then she’d hit puberty, and discovered she was nothing like her friends. She was still no better than they were, and no smarter, but she was stronger, faster, with better reflexes, and she was that way because she had a destiny.

It wasn’t something she’d asked for, or even something she wanted, but apparently she didn’t get to choose. She was the chosen one, the Slayer; the potential had always been there, buried deep inside of her, like a seed waiting for the right conditions to develop. The right conditions, she soon learned, meant the death of the previous Slayer, a girl not much older than Buffy herself.

Just like that Buffy’s life had changed, and she’d been forced to change too, from a reasonably normal kid with above average grades to someone who was considered a troublemaker, forever skipping classes, and getting into fights. Her grades began to slip, and Buffy couldn’t even tell them why. Her parents started fighting; it was the beginning of the end for their marriage, and she couldn’t help but blame herself.

She wished she could turn back the clock, be normal Buffy again, but that wasn’t how destiny worked. For the next Slayer to be called, Buffy would have to die, and that wasn’t fair; she was so young, with her whole life ahead of her!

People said finding a purpose in life was a good thing, but they were wrong. Destiny was cruel, it removed the freedom to choose, made her life no longer her own. She was someone else’s puppet.

The End

I love these works of yours; they are too outstanding to lose, ever... but the only thing I disagree with her about this is that she's nobody's puppet, she's in fact Someone's adopted stepdaughter and has received some of her inheritance.
