Characters: Drake, JJ.
Rating: PG
Setting: After Like Like Love.
Summary: Drake wishes he knew the secret to JJ’s perennial cheerfulness.
Written Using: The dw100 prompt ‘Happy Place’.
Disclaimer: I don’t own FAKE, or the characters. They belong to the wonderful Sanami Matoh.
A/N: Triple drabble.
“How d’you always manage to stay so cheerful?” Drake asked his partner one day. He and JJ had been dating for a couple of months now, so he figured it was safe enough to ask something so… sort of personal. “I mean, after that crime scene this morning... Well, it was pretty grim, and here you are, all smiles and good humor.”
From the moment the Chief had first assigned JJ as his new partner, Drake had noticed that no matter what they went through at work, and regardless of the terrible things they saw almost every day, his fellow detective was seldom without a smile on his face, except when it would be inappropriate. JJ was perky, cheerful, friendly, a perennial ray of sunshine in Drake’s often gloomy existence.
“I’m not always cheerful, Drakey, but I suppose I’ve gotten pretty good at pretending to be. I had a lot of practice back when I was mooning over Dee. I didn’t want him seeing me all mopey, so I did my best not to let it show. Whenever I was feeling down, I’d go to my happy place and that always made me feel better. It still does.”
“So where is this place that makes you happy, and how d’you find time to go there?”
JJ laughed brightly. “It’s not an actual place, silly, it’s more somewhere I’ve built up inside my head. When work gets stressful, I imagine myself in a beautiful garden, full of brightly coloured, sweet-scented flowers. There are butterflies fluttering about, the sun’s shining, and the birds are singing. It’s never failed to lift my spirits. When I think about it, all my cares melt away.”
“Sounds great.”
“If you’d like you can share it. We can imagine being there together.”
“I’d like that a lot.”
