“I think we might be in trouble,” Ianto murmured.

“Why d’you say that?” Jack came up alongside him in the sewer tunnel. “Oh. That’s not good.”

“That’s what I was thinking.”

Ahead, just at the limits of their torch beams, the light was reflecting redly off at least a dozen pairs of eyes.

Ianto and Jack had come down into the sewers while chasing a rather nasty alien creature called a Quilch, about the size of a badger, with thick, reddish-brown fur, a wickedly barbed tail, and two rows of needle-like teeth set in a long snout. Quilch were vicious animals, best exterminated on sight; letting it get away hadn’t been an option, so they’d been forced to follow wherever it led.

Most of the time, even in the sewers, Cardiff’s Weevils preferred to keep to themselves. Encountering even one down here was a rare occurrence, but running into an entire pack…

“Maybe if we back up slowly,” Jack suggested.

“What about the Quilch?” It was only a few yards ahead of them.

Before they could move, the Weevil pack lunged for the Quilch. It didn’t stand a chance.

Jack shrugged. “Problem solved. Let’s go.”

“I’m way ahead of you.”

The End

So sometime Weevils can be useful. They probably thought the Quilch a tasty snack and ate it, while Jack and Ianto got to go home, and find something more pleasurable to do.
