Doctor Who Drabble: Sitting In

Title: Sitting In

Summary: Bill isn’t a student, but she still wants to learn.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Doctor Who, or the characters.




Bill was on the university payroll as canteen staff; technically she had no right to be sitting in on lectures, but she wanted to learn. If anyone told on her she might get into serious trouble, even lose her job, so she kept her head down, tried not to draw undue attention to herself.


But this was her favourite class; the lecturer, the man everyone knew as the Doctor, was just so amazing. She didn’t understand half of what he said, but she didn’t care.


Only now he wanted to see her. In his office… Would he call the authorities?

What exactly would the authorities do? Fire her from the canteen? Demand she return the amount owing to attending these classes for free?

I like the fact that Bill's goal is just to learn.:)

Possibly fire her, ban her from the campus, I don't really know. I actually hated this prompt and wasn't happy with the drabble, but it was all I could come up with. I do love that Bill wanted so badly to learn though.

I really liked how Bill's storyline started out that way. I would have done the same if I had been in her position. I gather that the Doctor didn't do a roll call. That's something teachers or professors would do.

Not necessarily in university. In schools of course they would, for the attendance records, but universities are more relaxed since the students are basically young adults. I suppose it depends where you are.

Bill was the perfect kind of companion, full of curiosity and a desire to see and discover.

Okay. It's usually done for safety reasons. When I went to TAFE, we had to state if we were leaving early.

Yeah. I could have done with another series with Bill. I should be thankful she's out there somewhere with Heather. Instead of staying, you know, dead.

Chances are she'll just be written off as a runaway. Woman of colour in foster care... It's disgusting, but that's the kind of thing that happens. There's still so much casual racism in the world. It bothers me. The show should have tied up loose ends, but it never seems to.

That's really sad. A throwaway line would of helped. Bill had friends right? I guess it's left to fanfic to fix it.

It also bugs me that they (Moffat), only made a big deal over Bill's mother. Yeah, I get it that she died. While they (Moffat), never referenced Bill's father in any way.

Perhaps Bill's dad was never in the picture, or was mentioned in a scene they had to cut for length.

Everything writers can't be bothered to include gets left to fanfic writers to fix. Sometimes it seems TV writers are getting lazy because they don't bother with the details.

I guess I'll put that under the "Disappeared Dad" - Trope.

Eleventh Doctor: You think you can just bring your dad along without asking? I'm not a taxi service, you know.
Rory: You materialised around us.
Eleventh Doctor: Oh. Well, that's fine, then.

Yeah. It's whatever suits the writers narrative. Bill's grief over her own mother was similar to Clara's storyline in that sense.

That's the Recycled Script Trope. There's a reason why there are adaptions of novels and films.

I don't think about tropes. Everything is a trope of some kind so I never bother trying to figure them out.

I use the term "Trope" loosely, as a point of reference. When I feel my range in vocabulary is failing.

I seldom use it at all. It annoys me because I don't really recognise things as tropes. My brain doesn't work that way.
