A/N: Triple drabble and a half.

If not for the circumstances, Buffy’s question about why he’d choose a very slow journey by boat over a fast trip by plane would probably have amused Angel. Here he was, about to embark on the urgent mission of taking part of the Judge to the furthest, most remote part of the earth that he could find to keep the demon from being resurrected, and while he’d prefer to be back with the girl he loved in a matter of days rather than weeks or months, it simply wasn’t practical.

He told her he had to take a ship because on a plane he’d have no sure way to guard against daylight, but while that was true, it wasn’t the only reason.

Buffy had flown before, but only within the United States. It wouldn’t occur to her that to fly, Angel would need a passport. To apply for one would require time he couldn’t afford, and certain documents, such as a birth certificate. He’d also need to get his photograph taken, which was a whole other complication. Then, even if he managed to do all that, book a night flight, or a series of them, and pay in cash since he didn’t have a credit card, how did Buffy expect him to get an arm in a box through customs? Especially one that had a mind and a life of its own. It had already tried to strangle Buffy.

No, for a vampire on a mission, stowing away on a ship was the best choice. No tickets or passport required, no problems with customs wanting to open and check his luggage, no risk of flights being delayed and arriving in daylight, leading to him inconveniently bursting into flames, and since there were always rats on ships, he wouldn’t go hungry.

It was the safest and best option for everyone concerned, the only one that meant he could set out immediately, and just as importantly, this way he wouldn’t be leaving a trail that Spike and his minions could follow. The Judge’s arm could disappear, and with luck, stay lost forever.

The End

Yeah, and one of Angel's problems would be that his birthdate would actually be before the American War for Independence; that'd attract notice for sure.
And should he lie about his birthdate; that kind of thing opens a doorway for the First to manipulate him; and that mobster spirit is by far a greater threat than being revealed as highly unusual due to his age and apparent health.
Ironically, he does appear to have his US Citizen papers, for he ended up in a special mission in the past of the "Angel the Series" episodes, the one about a highjacked Nazi submarine which indicated that the Nazis were experimenting on vampires- that was a fun idea: the humans being by far the more deadly monsters altogether... I liked that immensely!
