Summary: The usual rules of combat don’t always apply when fighting aliens.

A/N: Double drabble.




Hand-to-hand combat was an essential skill for a Torchwood agent. They couldn’t depend on their colleagues to be there when they were in danger, and neither could they always rely on their Torchwood Specials. Guns were useful tools in some situations, but they weren’t always effective against the enemy, and sometimes shooting would put innocent civilians in danger.


There were various ways of incapacitating an opponent, but what worked on one alien didn’t necessarily apply to all species. You couldn’t stamp on a foot, kick a shin, or punch someone in the solar plexus if their anatomy didn’t include such parts. Only in Torchwood was “How do you fight a jellyfish?” a valid question.


The creature was hostile, seven feet tall, and had no legs, just long, stinging tentacles. It absorbed bullets fired at it, and knife wounds healed immediately.


“Any ideas?” Ianto asked, huddled behind a parked car.


“Just one.” Jack took a hand grenade from his pocket, pulled the pin, and tossed it.


As it struck the alien, like the bullets it was absorbed. Then it exploded.


Bits of jellyfish rained down everywhere.


Ianto pulled a disgusted face. “Clean-up’s going to take forever.”


“But we won the fight!”
