“You challenge me?” the demon thundered. It was twice Buffy’s height, an ugly thing, all hairless warty skin, and yellow eyes, but looks didn’t matter. It wasn’t as if she wanted to date it.


“Sure, why not? You don’t look so tough.”


The demon threw its head back and laughed. “What chance does a tiny, insignificant human pup have against such as I?”


“Do you just wanna brag or are we doing this?”


“You are brave. Foolish, but brave. Very well, I accept your challenge.”


“Oh goody. Can we hurry this up? I have math homework and if I don’t get it done, Mr Mackenzie is gonna kill me. I might even get detention! Like I don’t have enough interfering with my social life already.”


“Your problems do not interest me. Prepare to die.”


Buffy drew her sword. “Right back at ya.”


The demon wasn’t made for speed. Big and strong was all very well, but manoeuvrability was key in a fight like this, and that was one thing Buffy had going for her. A sharp sword came in handy too. As Buffy lopped her opponent’s head off, she sighed.


“Looks like I’ve still got that math homework to do.”

Slayers should be exempt from homework. If only there had been a way for Buffy.

Sadly she can't broadcast that she's the Slayer, it's supposed to be mostly a secret.

Yeah. It's a challenging destiny, with very little benefit. Except for the relief of saving/protecting people.

True. It's especially hard when you think it's always young teenage girls who have to sacrifice normality as the Slayer.

Yeah. A male slayer would have been interesting in its own way. The reboot could have done that. Since the period thing was no longer canon in the TV series.

Of course, guys are considered more able to fight anyway, which was the whole reason the trope was upended to have a teenage girl be the Slayer.

True. Generally a guy is considered more physically strong and are less likely to be sexually harassed like Buffy was on some occasions.

That's part of why having the Slayer be a small, slim girl was so appealing. It was empowering to see a girl be such a badass.

True. A male slayer could have been something left for a one time thing in an episode. I honestly think a reboot is unnecessary. I suppose its purpose is just to change things that weren't allowed at the time.

That's true. Probably more text messaging, rather than leaving a message on an answering phone is one obvious example.

Plus the computers are so clunky, and no one has a cell phone for emergencies.

Buffy: A telephone. And you didn't think that'd be helpful?

Yep. And floppy disks instead of USB's. People used pagers for emergencies back then.

Technology has come a long way in the last 20 to 30 years.

Yeah. There are less book stores and the library experience is slightly different.

If someone told me back in the 90's that I'd be using my phone for the internet, as a camera etc. I'd probably laugh in their face or look at them in disbelief.*half-jokes*

People read books on e-readers these days, if they read at all. I still say there's nothing better than a real book.

When I was kid, just the concept of a phone you could carry in your pocket would have been ludicrous. As for people having computers in their own homes... Back then, computers were things that filled an entire room, at least. Now here I sit with my laptop, talking to someone on the other side of the world!

Technology gets smaller physically, while the possibilities get bigger. But it ain't always cheap.

Seems as though the demon would be far more likely to have a good solid laugh about her problems.
