A/N: Double drabble.
“How do I know you’re really the police? You’re not in uniform.”
“That’s because I’m a detective,” Ryo explained patiently.
“Let me see your badge then.”
Ryo couldn’t blame the woman for being cautious; having someone break into her home while she was in bed asleep would be enough to scare anyone. Lucky for her, according to her phone call the thief had taken what he wanted and left. She’d woken to find her apartment stripped of everything of value the thief, or thieves, could lay their hands on.
Unclipping his detective shield from his belt, Ryo held it up to the peephole in the front door.
“If it would make you feel better, you can call the 27th Precinct, have them confirm who they sent, Detectives Maclean and Laytner.”
Dee held his own shield up to the peephole.
“No, thank you, that won’t be necessary.”
They heard the rattle of various locks being unfastened and the door opened.
“Come in, detectives. I’m sorry for being so suspicious.”
“It’s perfectly understandable, don’t worry about it. If you don’t mind my asking, how did the thieves get in with all those locks on your door?”
“The fire escape.” The woman looked sheepish. “All the money I spent on security and I left the window onto the fire escape ajar so my cat could get in and out. It never occurred to me that someone might be out there looking for an open window.”
“It’s a common mistake. People forget that fire escapes make for easy access. You might want to look into getting window locks fitted.”
“And keep all your windows shut and locked at night or when you’re out,” Dee added. “Your cat will just have to get used to stayin’ in at night. Be safer for both of you.”
