Buffy liked Dr Gregory; he was just about the only teacher who didn’t treat her like some kind of delinquent. The day he had a talk with her, dismissing her problems at her last school and telling her she had a first-rate mind she thought at first that she was hearing things, but he was serious. He believed she could excel at biology, and it made her want to. As she left the classroom she decided as of that moment, he was her favourite teacher.


Then the She-Mantis went and killed him, bit his head clean off! Even if she hadn’t then tried to seduce Xander and bite his head off too, killing Dr Gregory would have been enough to make Buffy want to terminate Insect Lady with extreme prejudice. The one teacher in the whole school who looked past her permanent record and saw the kind of student she might become if she applied herself and did her homework, and a giant praying mantis decapitated him. It was like she was jinxed, or maybe she WAS the jinx. Anyone who was nice to her got fast-tracked to the sweet hereafter.


Jesse, Dr Gregory… Who was going to be next?

Biology mastery might also help her to hunt monsters, come to think of it... as well as destroy them when she runs across them. Hunters have to know the animals they might run across, and "Insect Lady" as she dubbed the monsteress which she's got to destroy in this did give away some details of her "species" requirements for biology, as well as how to destroy them when she runs across that kind of monster.
