“Relax, Rhi,” Ianto told his sister. “I said I’d be there for Christmas dinner and I will, one o’clock on the dot, without fail. I already have everyone’s gifts in the car, I just have to finish up at work and then I’ll be on my way. You never know, I might even be early.”


“What’re you doing at work on Christmas Day?” Rhi demanded. “Isn’t the office closed?”


“Yes, of course,” Ianto lied. “I just stopped by to check everything was secure and to feed the… uh…” Ianto bit his lip. He could hardly tell his sister he’d needed to feed a Pteranodon and assorted aliens; she’d hang up and send for the men in white coats, have him hauled away to Providence Park. “The cat.”


“There’s a cat where you work?”


“Sort of a stray, but the weather’s so awful I’ve been keeping her indoors and taking care of her.”


“What a soft-hearted sod you are. Wish you cared about your family as much as you care about strays.”


“I do care. I’m coming for Christmas, aren’t I?”


“I’ll believe that when I see it. Don’t be late.” Rhi hung up.


Ianto sighed. He failed as a brother.
