“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have yelled at you. That wasn’t fair.”

Bikky stared at his foster father in astonishment; he couldn’t remember any grown-up ever apologising to him, not like that, not even his dad. Grown-ups didn’t apologise to kids, especially not for telling them off when they did something wrong. Why should they? Grown-ups made all the rules; kids were just expected to do as they were told.

How was he supposed to deal with this? He was only ten and now his understanding of the world he lived in had been turned on its head! What would a grown-up do?

“I’m sorry too, Ryo. I shouldn’t have left my stuff lying around, I just forgot.”

Ryo smiled at that. “Nobody’s perfect; we all forget to do things sometimes, or else do things we shouldn’t.”

“Not you though, ‘cause you’re a cop! You wouldn’t break the law.”

“No, I wouldn’t do anything illegal, not on purpose, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still make mistakes. Like just now. I yelled at you when I should’ve just asked you to pick up after yourself.”

Bikky shrugged. “It’s okay; I’m used to being yelled at.”

“Maybe so, but that doesn’t make it right. How about if I try to keep the yelling to a minimum?”

Considering that, Bikky nodded. “And I guess I could try not to leave my stuff lying around all the time.”

“That sounds fair. Come on, I’ll give you a hand putting your things away.”

“Thanks, Ryo.”

That was lovely! Not enough adults are willing to apologize to kids.
