Dee sprawled untidily in the chair at his desk. “I’m done,” he groaned. “How long have I got until I can draw my pension?”

Ryo snickered. “Twenty years, give or take.”

That drew another pitiful groan from Dee. “I could’a had a cushy job in a nice, air conditioned office somewhere, or been bartender in a club. Hell, I could even be workin’ as a lifeguard, or a personal trainer. Why’d I have to decide to join the force? Same old grind, day in and day out, gettin’ buried in paperwork and chasin’ the scum of the universe.”

“We’re cops, Dee, not the Men in Black.” Ryo was well used to his partner’s occasional dissatisfaction with his chosen career and knew not to take it seriously.

“Chasin’ aliens, now that would be a fun career!” Dee sighed mournfully. “I need my head examining.”

“I can’t argue with that.”

“Hey!” Dee sat up straight, throwing a wounded glare Ryo’s way. “You’re my partner; you’re supposed to be on my side!”

“I am!” Ryo was all innocence. “I was agreeing with you; wasn’t that what you wanted?”

“Huh, thanks a lot; you’re a big help,” Dee grumbled sarcastically, sliding back down in his seat, intent on continuing feeling sorry for himself.

“You’d be bored to tears in any other job and you know it,” Ryo said firmly. “Being stuck behind a desk all day every day wouldn’t suit you, and tending bar would get old fast, dealing with rowdy drunks every night. Where else could you find the variety you get as a cop? With this job you get a bit of everything; the desk work, the rowdy drunks, and plenty of exercise. The grass isn’t always greener elsewhere.”

“Yeah, maybe you’re right.”

“Of course I am. You’re exactly where you belong.”

Dee, there's a support group for people who hate their jobs. It's called "Everyone", and we meet at the bar on Friday night.

Being dissatisfied with your job part of the time is a step up for a good part of the population.
