Hurricane Season. Used to be, the islands, Florida and the southernmost coastal states bore the brunt of the wild weather, but thanks to climate change, these days practically everybody, especially along the coast, could expect a rough ride at some point, even if that just meant getting hit by the tail end of a few tropical storms.

Dee glanced out the window at the pouring rain being slammed against the glass by gale force winds; this was not the kind of weather anyone with half a brain would want to be out in. Likely as not you’d be either swept off your feet by the force of the wind or have something fall on you; a roof tile maybe, or a tree branch, one of those ugly ass gargoyles that decorated certain buildings, or an A/C unit torn from its housing. The one on the squad room window was making ominous creaking noses, and if that went it would leave a gaping hole for the wind and rain to come through. Just his luck that his desk happened to be in exactly the right place that he’d be the first to get drenched.

“Hey, Ryo?”

“Hm?” Ryo looked up from the paperwork pertaining to one of their current cases; he’d been going over it yet again, looking for anything that might suggest a new avenue for investigation.

“You’ve been starin’ at that forever. Put it away and come down to the firin’ range for some target practice. You’re not gonna get anywhere; the wind’s too loud to hear yourself think.”

Ryo shoved one hand through his hair, sighing in frustration, and took off his reading glasses. “I guess you’re right, think I’ve read the same sentence a dozen times but nothing’s sinking in; a break would probably do me good.” Flipping the file shut he put it in his desk drawer and followed Dee downstairs to the basement.

It was much quieter down there, the storm raging outside barely audible and Ryo’s head started to clear. He looked at his partner, suspicion nagging at him; nobody else was around.

“Why’d you really want to come down here?”

Dee looked sheepish. “Honestly? Figured it’s the safest place in the building. I had my way, we’d stay right here until Hurricane Season was over; that way even if the rest of the buildin’ gets blown away we’ll still be safe and dry.

The End

I'm on Dee's side. I had a chair go through the kitchen window during a wind storm and it was really traumatic.
