Summary: Bikky was only doing a bit of shopping for Ryo; now he’s being accused of theft!
Written Using: The dw100 prompt ‘Denunciation’.
Disclaimer: I don’t own FAKE, or the characters. They belong to the wonderful Sanami Matoh.
A/N: Triple drabble.
“He’s a thief!” the woman shrilled, pointing at Bikky. “I saw him put something in his pocket! Search him!”
The boy stood stock still, shocked. What was she on about? Yeah, he’d put something in his pocket: his phone. He’d just called Ryo to tell him the store was out of their usual brand of laundry detergent and ask if he should get something else. He was only doing a bit of shopping because Ryo was out of action with a nasty strain that made walking painful.
“I didn’t take anything!” he protested. “The only things in my pocket are my phone and the money my dad gave me for the shopping!”
“I’ll have to ask you to empty your pockets,” the store’s security guy said, looming over Bikky and gripping his shoulder. The woman was still shrieking about how his kind were all criminals and shouldn’t be allowed in a decent neighbourhood. Bikky’s heart sank; so this was all about the color of his skin. Racism was everywhere.
“Sure, no problem.” Bikky put his shopping basket on the floor, emptied his pockets and turned them inside out; all he had was money, some crumpled tissues, his phone and his keys. “Should I call my dad?” he asked the security guy. “He’s a detective working serious crimes; Detective Maclean, twenty-seventh precinct. I’m sure he’d have something to say about false accusations.”
“No, that’s fine. Sorry about that, kid, but I had to check it out.”
Bikky shrugged. “Not your fault, you were just doing your job.” He turned to the red-faced woman. “Maybe you should get your eyesight checked; you’re obviously seeing things. Oh, and I’d think twice in future before reporting a crime based on the color of someone’s skin. You could find yourself in trouble with the cops.”
