Title: Universal Language
Author: [livejournal.com profile] badly_knitted
Characters: Jack, Ianto.
Rating: PG
Written For: Challenge 611: Touch at [livejournal.com profile] tw100.
Spoilers: Nada.
Summary: Jack communicates a lot via touch.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Torchwood, or the characters.
A/N: Double drabble.

Jack is a hands-on kind of guy. He touches everyone, but especially the people he works with or cares about. He’ll take their hands in his, running his thumbs over their knuckles, squeeze a shoulder, rest a hand on the nape of a neck, the small of a back, or a knee. He’ll hug people, ruffle or smooth their hair, press kisses to foreheads and cheeks, even pat an arse in passing, and that’s before he even starts with the firearms training. It can be seriously disconcerting to anyone not familiar with his ways.

None of it is really intended as sexual harassment; Jack is simply from a time and place where touch is a form of communication, a language unto itself that the majority of intelligent life forms understand. It’s such a large part of who he is that its use is automatic.

Being such a private person, Ianto found it discomfiting to begin with, but over time he’s become quite proficient in the language of touch himself, especially with regard to Jack.

He understands that touch is something Jack needs; without it he shrinks in on himself, become withdrawn and moody. Hugs and kisses are the only cure.

Yes touch can be very reassuring as long as both parties consent. Adults should be able to agree, and no always means no. Jack and Ianto especially enjoy the contact, and I thoroughly enjoyed what we were allowed to see
