Double Drabble: In Control

Summary: Gwen doesn’t understand Jack’s attitude.

A/N: Double drabble.




“How can you be so calm?” Gwen snapped at Jack. “Doesn’t anything ever get to you? It’s like you’re not even human!”


‘Oh PC Cooper,’ Jack thought. ‘If only you knew.’ Just because he appeared calm and in control didn’t mean he felt that way inside. Gwen had a lot to learn, things the rest of his team already knew. It was no good acting panicked and confused, no matter how they actually felt; they had to at least maintain the illusion of being in control of a situation.


Gwen thought that because he and the others didn’t freak out in the face of something weird and unearthly causing death and mayhem amongst the ordinary people of Cardiff it meant they didn’t care, but really the opposite was true. They cared, so much that it hurt, but they had a job to do, a situation to deal with, and the best way to handle any crisis was to remain calm and not lose your head, which in cases like this was a literal possibility.


If they let their own fears and uncertainties govern them they wouldn’t be able to do their jobs and more might die. It was that simple.

A lesson Gwen never learns. Everything is about her - her life, her family (parents, husband, child), her job - her role in Torchwood - her being IN CHARGE, her being the HEART of Torchwood. So of course she gets upset, angered, overwhelmed, overwrought when things happen that she doesn't care for, don't go her way, things that surprise her, things that confuse her or even when her teammates (all with YEARS more experience and greater knowledge and abilities) don't act the way she expects-wants-needs. Good thing she has that bottomless bag of "cow-eyes-of--" expressions to draw upon. Thanks for this.
