Summary: Ianto tried his best, but it wasn’t enough.

A/N: Angsty double drabble.
The bitter taste of defeat is almost worse than the emptiness of loss, the unbearable weight of guilt, and the cold, numbing shroud of grief. After so many months of overcoming every obstacle thrown in his path, escaping Canary Wharf, making the long journey to London, keeping Lisa alive and hidden, gaining entrance to Torchwood Three’s base, and allaying the team’s suspicions, in the end it was all for nothing.
He’d done the best he could, given his all for the woman he loved, but no matter how hard he’d tried it hadn’t been anywhere near enough.
Ianto wants to scream at the universe for the unfairness of it all! Lisa was everything he knows he isn’t. Confident, beautiful, vibrant, and brilliant, she could have contributed so much, made the world a better place, but now she’ll never get the chance to show what she could have done. The world, and everyone in it, has been cheated.
The wrong person died; it should have been him. What can he possibly offer to make up for all that might have been? Compared to Lisa, he’s a poor substitute.
How is he still breathing when she’s not? Without her he has nothing.
