Doctor Who Drabble: Fractured

Spoilers: Father’s Day.
Summary: The Doctor can’t blame Rose; this is his fault as much as hers.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Doctor Who, or the characters.




The Doctor understands why Rose did it. Because her father had died when she was a baby she’d never had the chance to know him except through the stories her mother told her. She just wanted the chance to connect with him, see for herself the kind of man he was, fill in a tiny part of the gap his death had left in her life.


She wasn’t supposed to save him, and perhaps this is really the Doctor’s fault more than it is Rose’s, but Pete Tyler being alive has changed the past too much, and time has fractured…

This made Rose's father important. Since he's death was a fixed point. I believed Rose would have made slightly different decisions in her life, had he lived.

YASMIN: Just for an hour. See her from a distance. What's the point of having a mate with a time machine, if you can't nip back and see your gran when she were younger?

The dad's tend to get sidelined on New Who. I didn't like how Amy's parents get forgotten even when they were brought back after the series 5 story arc was resolved.:(

Clara's family were treated more like props. I still don't know who was the lady with her dad (the actor was changed) and grandmother during Christmas dinner. An aunty?*shrugs*

What was the deal with Rory's mum? No mentioned of her what so ever.

Where's Bill's dad?

So many blanks that were left unfilled.

I'm really analysing this aspect of the show a lot.*sighs*

Yeah, it's so weird! At least Rose had her mum, and both Martha and Donna had families.

I liked Rory's dad a lot but it's a shame his mum wasn't mentioned. As for Clara, she existed in so many time periods I got confused.

Brian at least had something to do with his limited screen time. We just needed to know why Rory's mum wasn't in the picture. A throwaway line at the very least. This is where fanfic comes in I suppose.

Moffat sure loves his mysteries. Too bad he interwove them in his companions characterisation. Rory got off lucky in that sense but then he also "died" so many times it got ridiculous.

Wouldn't surprise me if the writers didn't know either. Sometimes characters just aren't given names.

Brian was fun, I liked him, but you're right, some sort of throwaway line, "Your mum would've loved this, rest her soul."

I still enjoyed Moffatt's tenure far more than the last few RTD episodes.

That's probably why they wrote in a love interest for Clara aka Danny. There was nothing really on Earth for her besides her job as a teacher. Her mom was forgotten and that storyline was given to Bill instead.

I bet Brian and Wilf would've get on like a house on fire! :)

I see your point. You could see RTD had run out of steam by the end of his time as show runner. He actually started out as an illustrator. Before switching to writing as a profession.

I was sad that Danny got killed off in such a pointless way =(

I bet, they were both good characters I would have liked to see more of.

He should have stuck to illustrating. He has limited ability as a writer. I've read many fanfics written by people who are better writers than he'll ever be.

Danny didn't deserve to go out like that. We still don't know who ran him over. Most likely it wasn't shown due to budget cuts.

RTD sticks to a certain formula. The benefit I see from him bringing back Doctor Who successfully was chatting to you and others on LJ.

The American movie version was only bad because the writer couldn't produce it the way he originally wanted.

BTW: I heard rumors that if Torchwood gets rebooted, Yaz might turned up. That would be interesting.

Yeah, he has a very rigid mind. If he hadn't brought Doctor Who back though, someone else would have because he was just the guy the BBC asked to do it. The could have asked someone else. He can't take all the credit.

I hope they don't reboot, RTD would probably still be in power and we'd not have Ianto. Can't have Torchwood without Ianto and Jack.

Moffat said RTD had a habit of making decent characters but than killing them off. It's a statement that's between a compliment and an insult.*shrugs*

It's looks unlikely. I just wished Yaz had been given the spotlight more. She seems more competent than Gwen as a Cop.

He's right in a way, although I think the actors did more to bring the characters to life tan RTD's writing. But killing off characters is wasteful and counterproductive. Kill off someone the fans love and they'll leave in droves.

A lot more competent, but that wouldn't be difficult. Gwen was useless dealing with that bar fight. Did everything wrong.

I really hated how 3/4's of Torchwood was gone. Ianto's death for the worse written.

With Yaz, there is at least a hint of ambition to being a cop. I don't know why Gwen was a cop to begin with.*shrugs*

Yeah, it was just so unnecessary. Torchwood is dangerous. Yes, we get it, now stop killing people!

In the first episode when she was still a cop. There was a bar fight she and Andy were supposed to break up. Gwen just jumped on someone's back wit no warning and got thrown against the wall. That's why she wound up at the hospital getting treting for a head wound.

Buffy: I mean... look, I realize that every Slayer comes with an expiration mark on the package. But I want mine to be a long time from now. Like a cheeto.

Also I hated seeing Jack "die" constantly. Painful to watch.:(

Jack had to teach her how to use a gun. I guess batons are used more than guns in the UK by the police force?

No. Police announce themselves and get in front of combatants, they don't jump on them from behind with no warning. It made Gwen look completely incompetent from the start. If she'd got between two combatants and been accidentally hit from behind, that I could accept, but her stupidity was just beyond belief.

Regular police do not carry guns at all. You have to belong to a special armed response unit to carry a weapon.

Strangely Buffy did "die" twice. But the point is that she came back. Whereas Jack died many times in anguish. It would have been better had his condition been pain free like Claire from "Heroes".

Okay. I'm getting confused with "Elementary" where that was Sherlock's weapon of choice. Although that is one of the items Australian police officers used. There's like a list. I won't get into it because I wish there was a better alternative.

I knew someone who was a bouncer before becoming a police officer. So they know how to deal with rowdy people in a more strategic manner. Unlike Gwen.

Claire had it a lot easier than Jack.

I think maybe I wasn't clear. Yes, police have batons here, I should have said only armed response units carry GUNS rather than saying weapons. Because of course police have to have a mean of defending themselves. I think they have tasers too but I'm not sure on that point.

A good bouncer would make a good cop.

This makes me wonder. Why didn't another slayer pop up after the second time? Was it because Faith existed when Kendra died at the hands of Drusilla? The mind boggles!

Yeah. Claire had no reason to complain compared to Jack! Imagine a crossover between those two. I call it "Torchwood Heroes". I amuse myself.*shakes head*

Physically built, that's for sure. I guess the training helps them mentally prepare for the rest. It doesn't look like a pleasant job. But someone has to do it.

Yes, because Buffy died once and that took her out of the system, sort of. Kenda was her replacement, and Faith was Kendra's. If Faith died there'd be a new Slayer but Buffy's deaths I suppose no longer trigger a replacement because she's already been replaced once.

There are some crossovers where Jack and Claire meet, I've read a couple although I can't remember the titles.

The trouble is, not everyone who gets tasered is actually a criminal. I don't mind if criminals get taken down that way, but sometimes it's innocent people and that's bad.

Okay. I just looked up a few. There's potential for Peter and Rory crossover because of the whole nurse profession.

Yeah. There was an incident on the local news where a guy with mental health issues died. The police were trying to stop him from self-harm. I wish there was a better way to unarm someone.:(

I haven't seen any Peter/Rory crossovers but then I mostly read Torchwood rather than DW so I'm more likely to find Torchwood/Heroes crossovers.

That's sad. Trying to stop him hurting himself resulted in hurting him far worse. Maybe if there was a freeze ray, stop the suspect in his tracks, disarm him, handcuff him, nobody gets hurt... But the of criminals got hold of the tech they could rob anyone, or worse.

Tasers and stun guns can be used for torture. So I don't understand why it is acceptable in the police force. I guess they don't have better alternatives at the moment. It's a sensitive manner, I don't agree with any kind of physical force. Why can't the police know martial arts or something that is non-violent? They make it look so easy on TV or in the movies.*unsure what to think*

Martial arts are just as violent and dangerous as any other form of physical force, and also take many years to become proficient at. Do something wrong and you can easily kill someone by accident instead of just restraining them.

I don't like violence, but police have to respond to it in the same way. You can't stop most criminals just by talking at them. they have to be captured and very few are going to come quietly. Tasers are still marginally better than shooting people.

It takes a lot of effort to restrain someone without hurting them. I guess that's why there's a thing called sedation.

I reckon being a negotiator would be a stressful job. Trying to reason with people who have serious psychological issues. It's quite a dilemma.:(

But sedatives don't work on everybody and some people have bad reactions to them and could die because the police wouldn't know. Drugging people against their will and without their knowledge and consent is also physical abuse and against the law, plus drugs should only be administered by a trained medical professional. Inject them in the wrong place and they're useless. Plus you can't inject someone who's fighting you.

Being a negotiator is very difficult. It would take years of training and a psychology degree I imagine.

That's true. I struggled with my obligations as a carer. So I can't imagine what it would be like to deal with a stranger or dangerous situation brought upon by someone who maybe unstable.

Even then, there is always a risk in the outcome.

This discussion is a very heavy subject.

I used to want to join the police, but really it's a very dangerous, stressful, and often thankless profession. I salute all honest police officers everywhere.
