Double Drabble: Space Mechanics 101

Summary: Jack decides it’s time Ianto started learning about the mechanics of spaceships.

A/N: Double drabble. Set in my Ghost of a Chance ‘Verse.




“Welcome to Spaceship Mechanics 101,” Jack said cheerfully. “You’ve had time to get used to the controls and what the various dials and readouts mean, you have a basic idea of what the various systems are for and how they work, now I think it’s time you learned how to repair anything that might go wrong. Spaceships are a lot like cars…”


Ianto raised an eyebrow at that. “Cars?” he asked, a dubious tone to his voice.


“Well, okay, a cross between cars, planes, and computers. The point being their systems are a mix of the mechanical and the computerised. If properly maintained there shouldn’t be a lot of problems, but parts do occasionally wear out, or break, and have to be replaced. While a lot of the routine maintenance can safely be left in the hands of the spaceport mechanics, every spaceship pilot needs to have a working knowledge of how to repair their craft in an emergency.”


“That makes sense, but why go into this now, when we’re out in the middle of nowhere? Wouldn’t it make more sense to wait until we land at our next port of call?”


“Yes, except we’re having engine trouble.”


“Ah, Right.”

Jack already knows how quickly Ianto learns new skills. He'll make good use of the opportunity, and by the time they make planet fall Ianto will know almost as much as jack does. By the way found on pintrest a lovely pic of JACK IN A beautifully flaring coat coat. Alas I don't know how to send it here

He can certainly use Ianto's help. He's a quick study and the extra pair of hands will get useful. This is a good lesson, that things can go wrong and need fixing anytime, anywhere. Might as well learn now!
