Summary: Ianto was an indifferent student, but he learns fast when he needs to.

A/N: Double drabble.




There’d been a time, not so long ago, when Ianto hadn’t known one part of a car engine from another, couldn’t have identified a computer motherboard if it had jumped up and bit him. He’d just about known how to wire a plug and change a fuse, but that was about his limit.


But then Lisa had needed life-support and had told him how to cannibalise one of the Cyber-conversion units to provide it. He’d worked hard, following her instructions, and after that had started looking things up himself. He’d borrowed books from the library, scoured websites, spent hours watching tutorials on youtube…


He learned how to strip down and rebuild a car engine, fix a computer, microwave, vacuum cleaner, washing machine, all the basic household appliances. Most of it didn’t give him any insights into the workings of the machinery keeping his girlfriend alive, but Lisa had that knowledge and explained whatever he needed to know.


By the time he joined Torchwood Three he could turn his hand to most things of a mechanical nature, and quickly made himself essential to the smooth running of the Hub. Just went to show what could be achieved with the right incentive.

No wonder Ianto was so valuable apart from the coffee, even if the team didn't always recognise that. He had the determination to make the best of things. At last they came to value him, especially Jack if not for the same reasons.
