“That’s all you could get?” Dee asked as Ryo emptied the bags of groceries and started putting things away.

“It’s all we really need, Dee, plenty to see us through the week. We’re lucky, we have a well-stocked freezer and the cupboards are full, there were just a few items we were short of; bread, milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt, fresh fruit and vegetables, the kinds of things that don’t keep for long anyway. I stocked up on flour and yeast, there was plenty of both available, so if necessary we can make our own bread, and enough for our neighbours too. We’ll be fine.”

“I guess. I’m worried about Mother and the kids though; this is gonna be tough on them, especially if the schools are shut down. Without school lunches they’re gonna need twice as much food.”

“I know, I’ve been thinking about that too. I know you only just got off shift, but how d’you feel about helping me with another grocery run?”

Dee grinned.

It wasn’t easy, food was flying off the shelves so fast, and they must have visited a dozen supermarkets, plus a fair number of smaller shops, but they arrived at the orphanage with the trunk of Dee’s car full of cans and packets of things that would keep well.

Mother was overwhelmed.

“I don’t know what to say!”

“Just say you’ll stay safe,” Dee said firmly. “You’re not as young as you used to be. If you’re gettin’ low on anything, call us and we’ll deliver. I don’t want you goin’ out if you can avoid it. Bad enough you’re surrounded with kids.”

“We’re taking sensible precautions. You two need to be careful as well.”

“Yeah.” Dee grinned. “Can’t really do police work from home.”

“Thank you, boys. May God be with you.”
