Summary: Ianto remembers his mother.

Little Ianto stared in wonder at the frost making pretty patterns on the windowpanes. Coming up behind him, his mother wrapped her arms around him in a warm hug.

“That’s the work of elves you know,” she told him. “On winter nights they come and spin lace out of ice crystals to decorate the world and make everything beautiful.”

“Why do they only do it in winter?” Ianto asked.

“Because the rest of the year, the world is beautiful enough.”

Ianto smiled to himself. He knew better now, but frost on the windows would always remind him of his mother.

I think she was a very special person and was the person who inspired Ianto's love of detail. He's very observant so I believe that side of him came from his mother, who was beautiful, gentle and loved without reserve. Much like Ianto himself.

Beautiful! When I saw the summary I was expecting something angsty. It's nice to see Ianto with a happy childhood memory for a change. (This from the person who has a "Ianto's crappy childhood" tag...)

I really liked his mother's explanation of the frost. I'm sure it was this kind of attitude that made Ianto mentally equipped to deal with aliens on a regular basis later on!

I tend to think of Ianto's dad as stolid and unimaginative, but Ianto's so open-minded, curious and adaptable, it MUST have come from somewhere, hence his mother - beautiful, gentle, creative, imaginative, weaving magical tales for her children and helping them to really see the world around them and delight in its beauty. I think she's also very protective with an inner strength. Ianto gets his nurturing wqualities from her as well as his intelligence and observational skills.

I wanted Ianto to have some happy memories from his childhood to balance out the crappy ones.
