Back when they were younger, Bikky had done every odd job he could trying to earn enough money to buy Carol a pretty platinum ring she’d seen and fallen in love with in the window of a jeweller’s. He’d had it in his hands, knowing his girlfriend would be ecstatic when she opened her birthday present, but then a little kid had been mugged on his way to buy a gift for his mom who was in hospital, and Carol had never gotten her ring.


This time it would be different; Bikky had been saving for months, doing odd jobs again between classes and training, saving every cent he could, but the diamond solitaire was worth it. He only hoped Carol would love this ring as much as she’d loved the one in the shop window.


In all the years he’d known her, there had never been any other girl for Bikky, and he was determined to propose when she flew down to California to spend the Valentine’s Day weekend with him. He had a table reserved at a fancy restaurant, and had rented a suit to wear; he was going to do this right.


He prayed she’d say yes.
