Most places these days had modern push-button phones, usually cordless. Even payphones, the few that remained in public buildings, had buttons rather than an old-fashioned dial. Ryo supposed they were simpler to use, more practical, and dialling was a lot faster in an emergency, and yet there was something about the old-style rotary telephones that was lacking in modern phones.

He picked up the receiver, checked the number he wanted, and began to dial, finger in the correct hole, spin the dial, let it go, find the next number, on and on until the final digit was dialled, a series of clicks and then the phone on the other end started to ring. Receiver to his ear, Ryo sat back in his chair, patiently waiting for someone to pick up, glad that the police department at least wasn’t in any hurry to upgrade their phone system to something more modern.

I hated old rotary phones because they took so long to dial.

You could slam down the receiver, too, when someone on the other end of the line angered you. Ha ha!
