Being a parent was the scariest thing ever; Bikky wasn’t ready for this, didn’t think he ever would be. He’d wanted kids, knowing he could give his a better start in life than he’d had, but now he was starting to wonder if he and Carol had rushed into this too soon.

Having a kid wasn’t like owning a cat; Shadow was independent, only needing to be fed, groomed, played with, and cleaned up after, but a baby… It would need looking after twenty-four hours a day, every day, for at least the next eighteen years.

“Push!” the midwife was saying, urging Carol on.

Part of Bikky wanted to say, “No! Stop! Just keep it in there, where it’s safe!” Carol was squeezing his hand so hard it should hurt, but Bikky couldn’t feel anything, his whole body numb with terror. He closed his eyes, wishing he could wake up and find this was all a bad dream.

Then a sound cut through the fog surrounding him and he opened his eyes to see a wrinkly, gunk-covered form being lifted by the midwife. Bikky’s heart skipped a beat before starting to thunder so fast he thought for a moment he might faint.

“Congratulations, you have a healthy baby boy.”

Tears filled Bikky’s eyes as he gazed at the baby; his son! “He’s perfect.” Red face screwed up, and screaming his lungs out, somehow the baby still managed to be the most beautiful sight Bikky had ever seen.

He wasn’t ready to be a parent, had no idea what to do, but that didn’t seem to matter any more; most new parents probably felt exactly the same way, but they managed anyway and so would he, because he wouldn’t be raising this child alone. He squeezed Carol’s hand, grinned giddily down at her, and she smiled back, looking tired but happy.

“Our son!”  From this moment on, their lives would never be the same.

“Ready to cut the cord, daddy?” the midwife asked.

Bikky nodded; his first act as a father. He really hoped he wouldn’t embarrass himself by passing out.

The End

No matter how much experience you have with children it is never the same when it is your own. They're good kids and they will do a great job as parents.
