Chief Smith had entertained high hopes when he’d met his new detective. Randy Maclean was bright, well mannered, clean-cut, smartly dressed… in short, everything the perennial thorn in his side, otherwise known as Dee Laytner, wasn’t.


It had seemed a stroke of genius to pair the two together; surely Maclean would be a good influence on Laytner, forcing that lazy, no account reprobate to clean up his act.


Unfortunately, Latyner’s slapdash manner and disregard of regulations seemed to be rubbing off on Maclean instead.


On the plus side, when it came to closing cases they made a pretty good team.

Ryo doesn't let Dee get away with much so that better behavior might show up yet.

True, I think they're each taking on some of each others' characteristics and will eventually settle into a kind of middle ground, Ryo coming down a little from his super-efficient stickler for the rules and Dee getting a bit less haphazard.
